2018 Outstanding Tri-Rivers Alumnus Honored at Board Dinner

Alivia Christian

Alivia Young Christian is a 2012 graduate of Elgin High School, who majored in Tri-Rivers Health Care Professionals, which is now our Health Careers Academy. As a high school student Alivia was a standout—she was an active member of SkillsUSA, earned membership into the National Technical Honor Society, was selected as an Ambassador and a Teen Board member, plus she received one of the coveted Director’s Awards during the Senior Recognition evening at the Palace.

During her Senior year at the Career Center she was also dual enrolled in Marion Technical College. While at Marion Tech she worked at McDonald’s and for a short time she cared for her former junior instructor, Chris Pemberton’s mom. Chris said she completely trusted Alivia who was so caring and compassionate.

She completed her Associate’s degree at Marion Tech and received her RN in June of 2016. Alivia then started working at Marion General Hospital in July of 2016. She started on a medical floor for 9 months, then moved to step-down and just recently accepted a position in the ICU.

Alivia is the perfect nurse. Even in high school she always wanted to do her best. Unless she received a 100% on a test, it wasn’t good enough. She was and is a goal-oriented person and never happy with second best.

Alivia exemplifies our slogan of “A School Where You are ALLOWED to, INSPIRED, and EXPECTED to BE AMAZING!” At Tri-Rivers we truly expect our students to do amazing things. And Alivia with her attention to detail and desire to continually grow as a person and a professional is an AMAZING nurse. In a few weeks she will complete her BSN.

Robert Zwink

Robert Zwink is a 1996 graduate of Marion Harding High School, who majored in Tri-Rivers Electronics program.

Rob was nominated by his friend Joshua Simpkins who also graduated from Harding. Josh had this to say about his longtime friend:

I think Rob demonstrates that kids from modest backgrounds can still be very successful if they are willing to work hard and build a skill set that employers value.

I attended Marion Harding with Rob and then roomed with him when we both lived in Columbus in the late 90s. When I think of a self-made man, Rob is always the first person who comes to mind. After graduating from Tri-Rivers, he moved to Columbus with absolutely nothing—no money, no college degree—although he later earned a Bachelors of Computer Science from Franklin University—and no contacts beyond a few Marion people.

Rob initially got an entry-level job in tech support at Micro Center. Through hard work and determination, he worked his way up through various technology positions in the Columbus area including tech analyst for Lucent Technologies, Lead Software Engineer for Micro Electronics, Inc, and executive director for JPMorgan Chase & Co. He is currently the Chief Technical Officer (CTO) and co-founder of SafeChain Financial, Inc.

SafeChain provides executive leadership, architecture strategy and engineering solutions in support of blockchain backed title software devices.

Also, Rob is just a thoroughly decent guy. He’s a committed husband and father of two sons. He’s always willing to help people who need it. He’s never forgotten his roots and for a guy like him—who marches to the beat of a different drummer—Tri-Rivers opened the door to what has become an exceptionally successful career and life.

We at Tri-Rivers share Josh’s sentiments. Rob represents everything an Outstanding Alumni should. He is extremely successful in his field, a good citizen, a committed family person and an active volunteer with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Central Ohio for over a decade.

Billie Fields-Baer

Billie Fields-Baer is not only a graduate of Tri-Rivers Practical Nursing and LPN to RN nursing programs but also a long-time employee of Tri-Rivers. From the beginning of her career journey to several graduations—LPN, RN, and BSN) and licensure, she has grown into the profession as a nurse educator and leader.

Through education and mentoring, Billie has touched the lives of many students. She has a passion for teaching and understands the role of Tri-Rivers in adult students’ lives. She goes above and beyond to ensure that her students have a good understanding of topics and how they affect their everyday practice. She is always on the sideline coaching, cheering and encouraging students to stay positive and believe in themselves. She doesn’t know how to say “no.” She will always find a way to help or accommodate people in need. Her creativity has always provided solutions to any problems encountered.

Billie started her career as a Medical Assistant and Office Manager in one of the local physician’s practice. While working full-time and raising five children, she enrolled in Tri-Rivers first Evening Practical Nursing program. She graduated in 2004 with honors and received the highest award in the Practical Nursing program—the Margaret Helen Gast Award.

In 2012, she made the decision to further her nursing career by enrolling into the Tri-Rivers LPN to RN program. Again, she graduated with honors and received the Judith Ryan Higel award. Soon after graduating from the RN program, she enrolled at Ohio University where she earned her Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing and graduated Cum Laude.

This year she continued her nursing career journey by enrolling in a graduate program at Grand Canyon University with the goal of earning a Masters in Nursing Science.

In addition to her educational accomplishments, Billie has made multiple contributions to Tri-Rivers. Beginning in 2005, she has served as the instructor for the nursing prerequisite programs, Nurse Aide instructor and the Patient Care Technician Program Coordinator. Also, because of Billie’s caring personality and ability to connect and build rapport with students, she was chosen to serve as the success center’s academic and life coach. This year she also served as a clinical instructor in Tri-Rivers LPN to RN Program. It is obvious that Billie is involved in all healthcare programs; however, her main responsibility is being the Patient Tech Program Coordinator.

When she took over that role in 2016, she was able to make great improvements to the program and achieve record high outcomes, according to Dr. Emeline Kelly, the Nursing Director. Tri-Rivers received notification from the National Healthcareer Association commending the PCT program’s 2017 pass rates being above the national averages. It was reported that our 2017 pass rate currently sits at 97%, that is 19 points above the national average of 78%. The agency has requested to use the Tri-Rivers’ PCT program as a model curriculum because of these great outcomes.

Billie serves on the advisory committee for secondary’s Vet Science program and for the Health program at Marion Harding.

Steve McFarland

Steve McFarland is an electrician with over 25 years of commercial and residential experience. He’s a 1987 graduate of Mt. Gilead High School. In 1988 he entered the United States Army where he served as a 31 N 10 Communication System Circuit Controller. Steve served in Germany, was stationed in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War and was honorably discharged in 1992.

In 2010 Steve enrolled in our Adult Education Industrial Maintenance program. He graduated from the program in May of 2011—a 600-hour program with perfect attendance.

In August of 2011 Steve started Steve McFarland Electric LLC which continues to operate today. In October 2011 he began to give back his talents and expertise to Tri-Rivers, when he was hired as a part-time instructor for the Industrial Maintenance program he had previously completed.

Steve is an excellent instructor. He has competed the training and is a NCCER Certified Instructor for Core Curriculum and Electrical. He has not only been a very enthusiastic and reliable instructor for Tri-Rivers, he has  hired some of our students to work for his company!

Steve has always received very high evaluations from his students at Tri-Rivers. One of the questions that is asked on the evaluation is, “What did you like best about the course?” Here is just a small sampling of what Steve’s student’s say: “The Instructor, hands on and demonstrations.” “Inside knowledge from master electrician.” “The theory and knowledge and knowledge that our instructor brought to the classroom.” “Hands on. The excitement of Steve, to teach and his first-hand experiences.”

This past winter, in Steve’s Electrical Control classes it was amazing to see our adult students volunteer to come up front, diagram what they were learning and interact with the class. That just doesn’t happen by itself,  it’s instructors like Steve, who earn the classes’ respect for their knowledge and their ability to share their expertise with students who want to advance in their careers. It’s his passion for teaching  that makes Steve an Tri-Rivers Outstanding Alumni award winner.

Tri-Rivers School of Nursing RN ranked as Best in Ohio

For the second year in a row, Tri-Rivers School of Nursing LPN to RN program has been ranked at the Best in Ohio by RegisteredNursing.org, according to a news release from the group.

Nursing programs were assessed on several factors which represent how well a program supports students toward licensure and beyond, according to Sally Worthington of RegisteredNursing.org  “We analyzed past and present first time NCLEX-RN passage rates—weighted by year.”

She said, “The NCLEX-RN exam is used by all state boards of nursing across the United States to help assess a student’s competency and is required for licensure. Also, many state boards of nursing use the total overall NCLEX-RN pass rates for a school as one of the main ways to approve a school’s ability to provide a nursing education in the state. This is why we feel the NCLEX-RN pass rates are one of the best ways to determine a nursing program’s student preparedness, and that is why we decided to rank them using this method.”

“Eighty-nine schools in Ohio were analyzed and 30 qualified to be ranked”, said Dr. Emeline Kelly, Tri-Rivers Director of Health & Public Safety program.

Dr. Emeline Kelly

Dr. Kelly said, “They went back to the most recent years of data available up to five years, then averaged the schools’ pass rates, weighted the recency of the exam and considered the number of students taking the exam.”

The National Council Examination (NCLEX-RN) is the nationwide examination for licensing of nurses in the United States and Canada. Most recently the 2017 graduates of Tri-Rivers LPN to RN program achieved 95.8% passage of the NCLEX.

Dr. Kelly said the goal of the Tri-Rivers LPN to RN program at Tri-Rivers is two-fold. “First of all, we want our graduates to successfully obtain licensure as a Registered Nurse. Secondly, our students also receive education that focuses on the professional environment and current practice issues including evidenced-based practice and patient experience, in order to make them successful employees for today’s health care agencies.”
“We also place importance on continuing education by instructing our students that it is an expectation that they will obtain further education, minimally a baccalaureate degree,” said Dr. Kelly. “Additionally, we hold our faculty and staff to a high standard, relying on current practice and innovative educational strategies.”
Dr. Kelly attributes the high ranking from RegisteredNursing.Org and high pass rate of the NCLEX to her team who works one on one with students and “offers unparalleled support for students during their training.”
“We look at each individual student and work hard to support their goals of becoming a healthcare professional,” said Dr. Kelly.  “Each student is different. We recognize those differences and provide the support that help them succeed.”
Dr. Kelly said at Tri-Rivers School of Nursing it is “all about relationships. We are partners with our students. Their success is our success.”

Seventy-four healthcare professionals graduated during Tri-Rivers 2017 Adult Education Healthcare Graduation held at the historic Palace Theatre in downtown Marion—35 from the School of Practical Nursing and 24 from the LPN to RN Diploma program and 15 from the Patient Care Technician program.

Dr. Emeline Kelly, DNP, MSN, ACNS-BC,RN, Director of Nursing, said the 2017 graduates are exceptional and she expects great things from them. She also thanked families and friends who made sacrifices and provided ongoing support to the graduates.

This year’s recipient of the highest honor for the Practical Nursing Program—The Margaret Helen Gast Award—went to Ryan Michael Irons. This award represents the highest level of achievement in the Practical Nursing. “Margaret Helen Gast was the Director of the School of Practical Nursing for a number of years. The recipient of this award is recognized for being able to establish therapeutic relationships, demonstrating academic excellence; and conducting themselves self in a manner fitting the role of a practical nurse,” said Dr. Kelly.

The recipient of the highest honor for LPN to RN students—the Judith Ryan Higel Award—was Emily Yvonne Lake. This award is named in honor of Dr. Judith Ryan Higel. “For seventeen years, Dr. Higel served as the Administrator of the nursing programs at Tri-Rivers where she also served as the Director of Adult Education for a number of those years. The Judith Ryan Higel award is given to a student who is exceptional academically as well as clinically, supportive of their classmates, and a true role model for other students,” said Kelly.

The Patient Care Technician Highest Level of Achievement , the Judy Louis Norris Award was presented to Courtney Blair. “For 22 years, Ms. Norris was the Director of Adult Education and developed a myriad of programs, including Patient Care Technician. This award is given to a student who is exceptional academically and clinically, supportive of their classmates, and a true role model for other students,” said Dr. Jasmine M. Rausch, DNP, RN, CENP, C-OB, C-EFM, Nursing Education Programs Manager.

During the ceremony Tri-Rivers Chief Instructional Officer, Larry Hickman, commended the students on their dedication and hard work and challenged each of them to pass their National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). He also reminded them of Tri-Rivers slogan: A School Where You are ALLOWED to, INSPIRED to and EXPECTED to be AMAZING.

Hickman talked about the quality of education at Tri-Rivers and the fact that Tri-Rivers School of Nursing was ranked number one in the State of Ohio by RegisteredNursing.org by analyzing current and historical NCLEX-RN pass rates. “That is amazing and indicative of the quality of Tri-Rivers Nursing program, staff and students.”

Dr. Kelly also attributes the high passage rates of Tri-Rivers nursing graduates to the staff working one on one with students and offering “unparalleled support for students during their training.”  Kelly explained that they look at each individual student and work hard to support their goals of becoming a healthcare professional. “Each student is different. We recognize those differences and provide the support that helps them succeed.”

One of the indicators of success, is having excellent attendance. This year three students received Perfect Attendance Awards. “We believe that attendance is the top priority when it comes to a student’s performance. The best trait a person could probably have in any company or organization is their dependability, and the main factor of being dependable is attendance,” said Dr. Kelly.

The following students received the perfect attendance awards: Ryan Michael Irons, Practical Nursing; Heidi Joy Ferriman, LPN to RN and Courtney Blair, Patient Care Technician.

Highest Academic Achievement Award recipients were : Sarah Elizabeth Stark, PN; Courtney Blair, PCT.

Tri-Rivers Honors Outstanding Alumni

Tri-Rivers Outstanding Alumni recipients were honored at the 2017 Board Dinner, Wednesday, April 19 in the Multi-Purpose Room at the Career Center. The Tri-Rivers Outstanding Alumni awards recognize Career Center and Adult Center graduates who have contributed to their communities, are outstanding in their career fields and/or have furthered their educations. These individuals are Tri-Rivers Success Stories.

Four individuals were honored at Tri-Rivers Outstanding Alumni:

 • Tyler Lowe

“I have the pleasure of telling you about a young man I have watched grow up into a productive citizen,” said Terri Mantey, Tri-Rivers VOSE Coordinator. “He went to school with my kids. I have watched him play sports. I watched him walk across the stage at graduation. Then, I did not see him for a while, unless he attended his brother’s games and events at the school.”

Mantey said she was pleased to see him sitting in the adult education classroom one afternoon as she was leaving school. “He was now, officially, a Tri-Rivers adult education student studying paramedics.”

Mantey continued, “Last September, my husband, Joe, had a bad accident loading heifers in the trailer at the barns on Patten Pike. My son, Jacob, called as school was letting out to tell me to come right over, dad was bad. Keep in mind, through all the years I have never received such a phone call.”

“I went over to find my husband sitting on the ground in pain, telling us to give him a minute to catch his breath. No one had called for help, because he did not want help. Well, I have never been good ignoring accidents. I called 9-1-1,” Mantey said.

A short time later, Mantey heard the ambulance and emergency vehicles heading down the road, getting closer.  The person who took care of her husband and talked him into going to the hospital was Tyler Lowe.

She said he was very patient but matter-of-fact with Joe. “Tyler talked to Jacob and me about what was going on. Soon, they were on their way to the hospital, sirens blaring. I headed out to the hospital also,” said Mantey.

“While I sat in the waiting room, worrying, waiting to go back to sit with Joe, Tyler came out to tell me what was going on. Again he was very informative and kind.” Mantey continued.

Long story, short, Joe’s accident was very dangerous. He had 6 broken ribs, 2 in several places. His spleen burst, nearly killing him, and had to be removed. Then he had blood clots that went through his heart and nearly killed him. We spent 14 days in Trauma ICU and 3 more in Trauma unit. He healed and returned to work.

Mantey said Tyler did not just take Joe to the hospital and leave. He stayed in contact with my children to see how he was doing. That dedication to a trauma patient who was also a family acquaintance are part of what makes him good at what he does.

Tyler attended Hocking College and then Tri-Rivers Adult Education. He started his career as a volunteer at Fort Morrow Fire in Waldo in 2003 and he continues to volunteer there. • Logan Mitchell

“My first encounter with Logan was in 2010 when I was a substitute in the Diversified Health Occupations program,” said Billie Fields-Baer, Patient Care Technician Program Coordinator.

“When I first met Logan, he lacked confidence and doubted his own abilities. However, I knew after a few interactions with him, that he would excel in the health care field,” said Fields-Baer.

Logan is a 2010 graduate of Elgin High School, he also attended Tri-Rivers Career Center, Diversified Health Occupations program. Upon graduation, Logan chose to continue his education in our Adult Education, Patient Care Technician Program, where he earned his credentials as a State Tested Nurse Aide, Certified Home Health Care Provider, Patient Care Technician, Medical Administrative Assistant, Clinical Medical Assistant and as a Phlebotomist. After graduation, he began his career at Memorial Hospital of Union County in Marysville, where he utilized his Medical Assisting, Medical Administrative Assisting, Patient Care Technician and Phlebotomy certifications. It was during this time that Logan realized that phlebotomy was his passion, and then he pursued career as a Phlebotomist at The Ohio Reformatory for Women. During his time at ORW, Logan was promoted to Lead Phlebotomist, and director of the phlebotomy lab.

Currently, Logan is employed by Quest Diagnostic where he is a phlebotomist in a private physician’s office. Logan also provides training and coverage to other local Quest Diagnostic office labs. Logan continually gives back to his community, he still provides training to all new hires at ORW, and provides approved continuing education to the correctional nurses. Logan is an active member of our High School and Adult Education Advisory Boards, where he offers input to insure that our curriculum includes current policies and procedures within the Phlebotomy and Lab occupations.

Logan continues to give back by allowing our current Patient Care Technician Students a clinical site setting at his facility. Logan is living out our mission of contributing, advancing, and succeeding; of being a community member who stays involved in his profession, contributing back to Tri-Rivers and our community by sharing his skills and knowledge.

• Candice DeWitt

Candice DeWitt is a graduate of the Career Center’s Business Program. When Candice was a student at Tri-Rivers, the business program was a combination of business/computer programming/hardware modules.

“What I remember most about Candice during her years as a student was that she was smart. Really smart,” said Ellen Messenger, Director of Communications.  “In fact, I met her when her instructor came to me and told me about a student who was finishing her work too quickly and seemed to know the lessons or lab assignments before they were even taught. In other words, she was keeping her instructors busy trying to keep her busy and engaged.”

“But, nothing was working. So they asked if I would like this young lady to intern with me, said Messenger.  “Needless to say she was an awesome intern. She jumped right in and helped with our website and really anything I asked her to do. She was mature and a huge asset.”

Since leaving Tri-Rivers, Candice has continued to excel and grow. She became the Lead Website Designer for NuWave Media/Marion Online, then started Neighborhood Image and purchased Marion Online in 2010.

She also worked as the fiscal specialist for the Delaware County Auditor’s Office from 2009-2016.

In 2016 she became the Budget Director for the Marion County Sheriff’s Office where she replaced a long-time employee and accepted the challenge and responsibility of managing the day-to-day financials of the multiple departments at the sheriff’s office. Sheriff Bailey says she does an outstanding job in analyzing budget issues and solving problems.

In fact her work was so exemplary that in December she was named “Civilian of the Yea” by the Sheriff’s Department. Quite an honor and indicative of what she accomplished that first year.

She and her husband, Sean, continue to operate Marion On Line, while working full-time jobs. They are both dedicated to the Marion community.

In fact, most recently they donated their time and expertise to create a website for the MarionMade initiative. You can check it out at marionmade.org. She continually gives back to the community by offering low cost or free websites and internet marketing services and training for local non-profits.

Candice is truly MarionMade…and a blessing to the community. She is a Tri-Rivers success story. Above, Candice is pictured with her husband, Sean.

• Dylon Caudill

Our next recipient, Dylon Caudill is a graduate of our Engineering Technologies program. He has been an exceptional asset to his community, state and country in the area of robotics.

Dylon first attended the Vex Robotics World Championships in Anaheim, California as a high school Senior, and then as a college student at Marion Technical College. While in college Dylon also worked for Ridgedale schools as their Information Technology expert. He also helped their Vex Robotics team and worked many of our area events.

Two years ago the Ohio Vex leadership team recommended him to the Robotics Engineering Competition Foundation to be the Ohio representative. There were 6,000 Vex Robotics teams worldwide and 180 teams in Ohio at that point. Dylon quickly became invaluable to the world organization because of his work ethic, professionalism, personality, enthusiasm and knowledge of robotics and the competitions. They made him the Midwest Director for the Robotics Engineering Competition Foundation in 2015.

He now travels around the world helping with professional development, camps and competitions. This year, with Dylon’s leadership, Ohio now has more than 400 Vex Robotic teams and there are 18,000 teams world-wide.

Dylon helps run the largest robotics competition in the world in Louisville each Spring. It is hard to believe how much this young man has accomplished in his 22 years.

Mr. Ramey, his former Engineering Instructor at TRCC, says “Dylon assisted in writing the Straight A grant, as well as writing a grant to partner with Columbus for professional development, training camps and competitions over the next 10 years. He also was a part of the team that developed the national robotics curriculum and certification for career tech in robotics education.”

Mr. Ramey said that Dylon truly represents what career technical education is all about.”

Dylon was unable to attend the event as he is at the Worlds Vex Robotics Competition in Louisville, Kentucky.
