Students “Make A Difference Day” Successful

“Tri-Rivers in collaboration with United Way continues to give back to the community through service projects,” said Jodi Gaietto, director of academics and student services. “Today marks our 6th Annual Make A Difference Day event.”

Gaietto continued, “This is an excellent opportunity for our community to see all of the many talented and giving young people who attend Tri-Rivers.” MADD ag 2014

More than 200 Tri-Rivers students as part of United Way’s LIVE UNITED volunteer activities made an immediate and positive impact in the Marion Community.

Lois Fisher, area entrepreneur, spoke to the students in the morning at the school before they headed out to 15 different service sites which included places like the Marion Senior Center, Sawyer Ludwig Park, TRECA, Marion Towers, Salvation AMADD Humane Society 2014rmy, Palace Theatre, Primrose, Kingston, Goodwill Industries, Ohio Farmer’s Co-op, Charleston Place, Humane Society.

“We are excited,” said Angela Reiff, United Way’s Volunteer Coordinator. “Our area high school students want to make a contribution to help make our community a stronger place.”

Kelly Garrett, Assistant Director, noted, “This makes our sixth year of coordinating volunteer opportunities for the students at Tri-Rivers, and every year I look forward to this event. I have a front row seat to the difference these teenagers are making – the smiles of those they’ve helped, as well as the before and after pictures of where they’ve spent the day.”

United Way of Marion County supports 33 local health and human service programs provided by 18 Partner Agencies in Marion County. Those who wish to donate can pledge online at www.unitedwaymarion.org, call 740-383-3108, or via their workplace giving campaign.

Mrs. Schweinfurth named Cafeteria Operator of the Year

Tri-Rivers Cafeteria Manager Krista Schweinfurth received the “School Food Service Cafeteria Operator of the Year” award from RightWay Food Service.

Schweinfurth, who is starting her 10th year with Tri-Rivers, was selected for this honor from the more than 250 cafeteria operators who contract with RightWay Foods of Lima to supply food and supplies for their cafeterias.

Don Boger of RightWay said, “Krista runs a tight ship. She has one of the cleanest and shiniest kitchens I’ve ever seen.  When it comes to food, people buy with their eyes and her food line is always appetizing and appealing.”

He also commended her for being dedicated. “Last year when Krista’s mom was ill, she never missed an order deadline. She places orders twice weekly—always on time. She is firm and fair to deal with. As her sales representative, I appreciate her consistency, efficiency and professionalism.”

Tri-Rivers Director Larry Hickman credited Schweinfurth for taking Tri-Rivers cafeteria from the red to the black, while maintaining quality and a wide variety of foods that appeals to students. “It’s also notable that each year when we survey students, one of the things they always say they like at Tri-Rivers is the food.”

“I enjoy what I do,” said Schweinfurth. “It’s a pleasure to serve the students and staff in the Tri-Rivers district.”

Superintendent Chuck Speelman added, “At Tri-Rivers we enjoy celebrating success. Krista is doing an exceptional job and we appreciate her efforts.”

Tri-Rivers cafeteria serves more than 100 breakfasts meals and around 350 lunches for student and staff daily during the school year.

Sept. 6 Auction features Student Built House

Tri-Rivers annual auction will be held Saturday, September 6 starting at 10 am. at the Career Center Campus, 2222 Marion-Mt Gilead Road, Marion, OH.

The auction will feature a modular home built by Tri-Rivers students. It is approximately 1500 to 1525 square feet of living space. Other details include: 2 x 6 framing for added insulation value, Anderson Windows, Vinyl sided exterior, 3 bedroom, 2 bathrooms, large utility room, electric done and all plumbing roughed in. Team Cuisine Cooks Camp July 16-19 at TRCC

The 14th Team Cuisine Cooks Camp, a four-day workshop for Ohio high school seniors in Culinary Arts/ Food Service Management programs will be held at Tri-Rivers Career Center, Wednesday July 16 through Saturday, July 19. The annual, four-day event gives senior culinary students a taste of what it would be like to work in a restaurant, according to Chef Sheila Hamm, coordinator of the event and culinary arts instructor for Tri-Rivers.

Chef Hamm said, “Twenty-seven young culinary arts students from 15 schools throughout Ohio will delve into food preparation with instruction from 11 experienced chefs and culinary instructors who volunteer their time. Cooks Camp is Ohio’s longest running camp for aspiring chefs.”

The participants will work with the Chef Team to learn knife skills, bakery, meat, sauces, soups, etc throughout the workshop.  Then on Saturday they will work as a team and use those skills to prepare and serve a multi-course gourmet meal to their parents, high school instructors and industry partners at the Grand Banquet. “Our Chef Team will inspire students by giving them a sense of what life is really like in a real, working kitchen at crunch time,” said Chef Hamm.

The workshop costs $500 per student for the training, accomodations, a chef coat featuring the Cooks Camp logo, invitations to the Grand Banquet, and chef pants to be worn at the Grand Banquet . They also receive a knife kit, recipes, and note-taking supplies.

“This event allows future chefs to really get a feel for the field.  The conception, creation, and production of the meal is quite an accomplishment and an experience they won’t forget,” said Chef Hamm.

RAMTEC Consortium receives $14.99 Million Straight A Grant For Marion Training

RAMTEC Marion will be the central training and industrial certification center for Ohio. Instructors in the consortium will receive training in Marion.

The RAMTEC (Robotics & Advanced Manufacturing Technology Education Collaborative) Statewide Advanced Manufacturing STEM/Career Technical Education Consortium, led by Tri-Rivers Career Center, has received $14.99 million dollars through Ohio’s Straight A Fund. This grant will allow Tri-Rivers to partner with 8 additional career centers to expand and continue the vision of RAMTEC in order to address the skills gap by preparing high school and adult students with advanced manufacturing and engineering skills.

Tri-Rivers portion of the grant, $3.1 million, will be used for the expansion of RAMTEC as well as renovations related to advanced manufacturing and engineering—building a world class metal fabrication training center, state of the art CNC (Computer Numeric Control) machines/tools, relocating and upgrading the current Precision Machining program, purchasing necessary equipment for the Welding program and updates for the RAMTEC Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering program, according to Superintendent Chuck Speelman. “This grant will benefit high school students, adult education students and will be used to enhance our Incumbent Workers Training programs.”

“This grant emphasizes the importance of collaboration and will benefit the Greater Marion Area and all the schools we serve in Marion, Morrow and Union Counties. I’m excited about that and what it means to students,” said Speelman. “It will not only transform education here but by expanding the RAMTEC vision to the additional career centers, it will help to modernize Ohio’s education system as whole.”

The other eight career centers, who are part of the RAMTEC Consortium, include: Tolles Career & Technical Center, C-TEC (Career and Technical Education Centers of Licking County), Penta Career Center, Pioneer Career & Technology Center, Miami Valley Career Technology Center, Portage Lakes Career Center, Cuyahoga Valley Career Center and Great Oaks Institute of Technology. Each of these Career Centers will receive $1.5 million to build a facility similar to Tri-Rivers’ RAMTEC. The Marion RAMTEC will remain the central training and industrial certification center for Ohio. All instructors in the consortium will receive their training at the Marion RAMTEC.

The Tri-Rivers/RAMTEC grant was one of 34 innovative and cost effective grants recommended by the Straight A Fund Governing Board to be funded in the fiscal year 2015, according to a release from the Ohio Department of Education (ODE). The recommended grantees estimate savings and spending reductions of $246.7 million over five years. The Governing Board’s rigorous screening process emphasized collaboration and efficiency, according to ODE.

“Ohio’s Straight A Fund has given a big boost to the most innovative of Ohio’s local school districts who recognize that it takes bold, new approaches to equip our students for a more demanding workplace,” said Richard A. Ross, superintendent of public instruction. “Districts collaboration on these creative projects tells me we are becoming more cost-efficient.”

The $250 million Straight A Fund was created in the state budget signed last summer by Gov. John R. Kasich. More than 150 entities received $100 million last year, with $150 million earmarked for new grants this year. The Straight A Fund is part of a $1.6 billion increase in state funding for education over the two year budget cycle.

In all, a total of 662 separate organizations, including 446 public school districts, requested more than $761 million in the second round of the Straight A Fund grant award process. The applicant pool includes 73 percent of Ohio school districts.

Each grant application was first rated by three of approximately 180 independent fiscal scorers selected by the Department of Administrative Services who helped determine if applicants’ ideas were fiscally sustainable. From the original pool of 339 applications, 228 were approved as sustainable and promoted to the next step of the rating process. Each application was then rated by four of approximately 160 independent programmatic scorers selected by the Department of Administrative Services to determine if the proposal was innovative, had substantial value and lasting impact.

After this programmatic review, the Governing Board selected the highest scored applications to be evaluated for cost savings by grant advisors. The approximately 20 grant advisors—professional educators and community and corporate leaders approved by the Governing Board— issued a recommendation on the cost savings of the highest quality applications to the Governing Board who made the final recommendations. The State Controlling Board must give final approval before funds are distributed.

Criminal Science students receive 13 college credits toward an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice at Marion Technical College. 9 RAMTEC Students Celebrate FANUC Certification

Marion’s Robotics & Advanced Manufacturing Technology Education Collaborative (RAMTEC)—the first and only training facility of its kind in Ohio—celebrated the FANUC certification of nine high school students, Friday, May 16.

Mark Eddington, C.E.R.T./Fanuc Robotics Instructor for RAMTEC, says “These Tri-Rivers/RAMTEC Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering students are the first students in the United States to achieve this certification as high school students.”

RAMTEC is located on the Tri-Rivers Career Center Campus.

The first three Tri-Rivers Engineering students to earn FANUC Certification”Handling Tool Operations & Programming”, included Mason Dancz, Scott Gould, and Jeffrey Martin. They were followed by Austin Guthrie, Tyler Scott Ellis, David Moser, Casey Ogan, Zach Caldwell and Hayden Behrens.  Their Engineering Instructor Ritch Ramey said earning certification and skills in an area that is in high demand by manufacturing is a major accomplishment.

Gould said he plans to use his certification toward his goal of being a robotics technician at Honda. Gould was one of the students who joined Senator Rob Portman during a round table on the critical needs of manufacturing held at Tri-Rivers in March.

Edington said the students achieved their FANUC certification by working on the most current robotics equipment on the market. “They each received a course completion certificate and are “Fanuc Certified.” Edington, one of only eight FANUC certification instructors in the country, has 25 years of Engineering and Manufacturing experience with extensive knowledge in robotic and automation using Fanuc robots.  He had the opportunity to spend time in the Fanuc World Headquarters in Japan. “From my experience I can tell you that these young people have an edge by achieving this certification. RAMTEC brings this opportunity to high school and adult students in this area and all of Ohio and beyond.”

Several classes of adult students have also earned FANUC certification since RAMTEC opened in the fall, including individuals from companies/schools such as American Showa, Marion Industries, Honda, Con Agra, and Marion Technical College. Others to start training soon, include individuals from Cardington Yutaka, Silverline, Bridgestone, US Yachiyo, and Whirlpool.

RAMTEC is obtaining statewide and National notoriety with legislators , senators, Industry and colleges as the leader in providing certified training, said Edington. “This training is a pathway for students—high school and college— to build upon technical skill sets and open career opportunities for them.”

Mr. Hickman is State ACTE President

TRCC Executive Director is State ACTE President

Tri-Rivers Executive Director Larry Hickman was elected as president of the Ohio Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE).  ACTE represents Career Tech Educators throughout Ohio.

In this role, Mr. Hickman has had the opportunity to go to Washington D.C. to meet with senators and legislative aides to discuss the importance of continued support for Career Tech Education and its funding.

“Recently many of these discussions have centered around bringing back manufacturing jobs to Ohio,” said Hickman.  “We’ve talked and strategized about  how Career Tech Centers and Technical Colleges can work with business partnerships to build training initiatives to develop skilled workers to fill the many employment gaps facing Ohio.”

He also was involved in planning a professional development conference for Career Tech Educators in the areas of academics, technology, career tech instruction, and policy and legislative advocacy.

He works closely with the Executive ACTE committee and is part of the cutting edge of the latest changes in policy for standards and instruction in Ohio.

Brandon Parks Continues to AMAZE!

An acknowledged “plant geek”—Brandon Parks, a graduate of Tri-Rivers Landscaping Garden Center program, Ohio State ATI Landscaping Horticulture and current student at OSUM in Business continues to AMAZE! Kerry Beckel, his TRCC instructor said, “Brandon was an outstanding student in his program, FFA Activities and all leadership roles while at TRCC.” He continued to excel at ATI. His landscaping design was selected by AI Root Co. in Medina. The design involved landscape restoration of the historic homestead, according to Dr. Laura Deeter, his professor at ATI. Brandon completed an internship with Marion Landscape Services. He is continuing his education at OSUM.

Brandon was a student in the Landscaping Class in 2010 and 2011. He demonstrated outstanding leadership and a sincere interest in learning all that he could about plants and landscape design. He actually first shadowed the program as an 8th grader and spent the whole afternoon learning about the class. He excelled in plant identification and competed in the State Nursery and Landscape Contest in both his Junior and Senior years. He also competed in the Job Interview and Parliamentary Procedure Contests. The AI Root Co in Medina was looking to get the community involved in the landscape restoration of the historic homestead located next to the gift shop.  They came up with the idea of having landscape students design the property and I decided it was the perfect project for Landscape Design II.

The students travelled from Wooster to AI Root to learn about the history of the company, their plans for the future and their ideas for the landscape.  They arranged a friendly competition between the students and offered a small monetary reward for all, and included a donation to the Landscape Club at ATI for their fund-raising efforts to attend the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) Student Career Days in Ft Collins, CO.

The design parameters sounded simple enough: inviting to the public, bee friendly, public friendly, relatively low maintenance, seasonal interest, educational and matching the historic house. At the end of the semester the students presented their ideas to the company. It was then decided that it might be better to get professionals involved in choosing the winner. A luncheon was coordinated where the students would present their designs to Master Gardeners, Garden Club Officers, Professional Landscape Contractors and other interested community members, who voted on their choice at the conclusion.

After much deliberation, Mr. Brandon Parks was selected as the winner of the competition. His design made outstanding use of design principles and everyone felt he met the needs of the company, the garden and the community. His design utilized bee friendly plantings and he created an open and inviting space for anyone to wander and view the plants.

Mr. Parks is a graduate of Ohio State ATI in Landscape Horticulture, specializing in Landscape Design. He’s known for a long time about his desire to become a landscape designer and is an acknowledged ‘plant geek’. He completed his internship with Marion Landscape Services where he not only did basic landscape maintenance, but also designed container plantings and small gardens for their clients.
