Tri-Rivers Students attend Legislative Luncheon

Tri-Rivers student representatives attended the Ohio Association for Career & Technical Education (ACTE) Legislative Luncheon April 13, 2011.
They toured the historic Statehouse, heard speakers and met with Margaret Ann Ruhl, State Representative (R) for the 90th House District, which includes Morrow, Knox counties, as well as portions of Richland and Ashland counties. Great learning opportunity!

• Although reupholstered, the blue benches are original to the Senate Chamber.
• The Statehouse Rotunda stretches 120 feet from the floor to the skylight; it is filled with 12 different colors and distributes light to other areas of the building. The 29-foot wide skylight features a hand-painted reproduction of the Great Seal of Ohio from 1861.

Students tour Marion General Hospital

Students learned about Bio Medical Engineering, Public Relations, the Nursing Simulator, Physical Therapy, Radiography, Food Service, Maintenance, Linens and more during a recent field trip to Marion General Hospital.

Students in the mentoring program called Partnering Assets for Student Success (PASS) spent a morning with professionals on the MGH staff. The hospital staff provided an informative, hands-on tour.

“We appreciate the willingness of the staff at Marion General Hospital to open their facility to provide our PASS students with an opportunity to learn more about the hospital and careers in the healthcare field,” said Ellen Messenger, spokeswoman for the Career Center. “They put a lot of effort into making the tour educational, informative and fun.”

“The students were able to explore three areas of interest,” said Alice Bailey, Tri-Rivers career specialist. “The experiences were actively engaging and meaningful.”

Jodi Gaietto, a director at Tri-Rivers and coordinator of PASS, said, “Our students didn’t want to leave. All the way back on the bus they were talking about the equipment. It was an amazing experience for them.”

PASS is a collaborative student mentoring effort among Tri-Rivers, United Way of Marion, Marion General Hospital, Heart of Ohio Mentoring, Marion Area College Tech Prep Consortium, and I Can Center of Excellence. Each adult mentor works closely with up to three students, meeting monthly and maintaining contact in between. The mentor helps students explore potential careers while stressing the importance of grades, attendance, behavior, manners, person integrity, and vision for the future. Students participating finish the school year with a career plan.

The mentors are community volunteers, carefully screened and trained in mentoring high school students by Heart of Ohio Mentoring. Several mentors assisted with the tour at MGH.

A special thanks to Marion General for the tour, serving a mentors and financially supporting PASS.

 

Tri-Rivers Trivia Kings

The “TR Trivia Kings” are the champions of the Marion Evening Lions Second Annual Trivia Challenge held Sunday, April 10 at BW3 in Marion.  The staff team included: John Seibel, math/science instructor;  Randy Winland, director for Student Services; Jim Longo, social studies instructor; and Jon Crothers, math instructor. The TRCC team defeated 9 other teams by a margin of 9 points (out of 60 total) to bring home the championship. Awesome job team!!!

Job Fair @ TRCC April 14

The Multi-County Job Fair will be Thursday, April 14, 2011, 9am-3:30pm in Tri-Rivers Auditorium. It is free and open to the public.

Culinary students learn from pros

Tri-Rivers Culinary Arts Students recently were part of the American Culinary Federation/Ohio ProStart Day. The students traveled with their instructor Chef Sheila Hamm to this event held  in Columbus. They watched two chefs do demonstrations— one on spices and building flavor profiles and the other on Maine Lobster. The students also had the opportunity to network with industry chefs during lunch.  Students attending were Sarah Shipman, Brooklyn Gamble, Daniel Huntt and Eric Glosser.

Kyle Szymkowiak, Level 2 Public Safety Services (Marion Catholic) passed his National Registry .  He is a certified EMT-Basic for the State of Ohio; Kristina Gliem (Home Schooled) took her Practicals Feb. 19; Megan Dowdy (Ridgedale), Devon Boyd (Elgin), Dilan Gleespen (Ridgedale) and Jason Johnson (Elgin) have all completed their Practicals for EMT-Basic. They are all eligible to take their National Registry Exam.

• Computer Networking Electronics Technologies (CNET)
Ryan Zimmerman (Pleasant), from CNET1 has passed both parts of the A+ certification test. He is now A+ certified!

Career Tech Student Organizations = Success!!

Landscaping (River Valley) will each receive their State FFA Degrees at the State FFA Convention in May.
• Adam Breece in Landscaping (Elgin) earned a Gold Rating on his Chapter Treasurer’s Book and will be honored at the State FFA Convention.

Another Facebook Contest Winner

Jenny Ayala of Health Technologies won March’s “Most to Post” Facebook contest and received a fun basket of goodies! Jenny had the most people find Tri-Rivers on facebook and “Like” the page, then post her name. Several others won anniversary mugs with candy for having a friend or family member “Like” Tri-Rivers’ official page, then post his/her name. You can win, too!

The contest continues!! Our goal is 1,000 fans! Ask family and friends to “like” Tri-Rivers page and post your name and you win an Anniversary mug. Have the most new fans post your name and you can win a basket of goodies like Jenny Ayala did. Ambassador Club raises $300

Tri-Rivers Ambassador Club’s Pennies 4 Patients community service project raised $300 for patient services and cancer research.

The Ambassador Club members serve as representatives for the school at various activities throughout the year. They also are committed to community service and good citizenship.

 

 

Auto Tech gets FREE diagnostic online service for a year

Automotive Technology II students received a year of free service from Direct Hit Identifix of Las Vegas—that’s a $2,000/month value free.  With the service installed on their Netbooks, they can work at the vehicle and bring up wiring diagrams, flow charts, and diagnostic trouble code references.

Auto Tech Instructor Frank Snyder said they were able to get the free service since  he and the program are ASE certified.

The students were trained by Judy Wax of Indentifix.

This is a great learning tool for the students, said Mr. Snyder. “It’s a win-win situation.”

Outstanding Adult Alumni recognized

• Cynthia Kay Butterman was the recipient of the Adult Education Outstanding Alumni Award. She was introduced by Adult Director Richard George during an evening ceremony, March 16.

The mission of Tri-Rivers Career Center is to prepare secondary and adult students to contribute, advance and succeed in the 21st Century workforce…to be responsible community members, and to embrace learning as a life-long process. Tonight we are recognizing one of our alumni who has certainly fulfilled that mission.

On December 8, 1998 Cynthia Kay Butterman filled out an application form to enter Tri-River’s Practical Nursing Program. Classes started on August 11, 1999 and on June 16th 2000 she graduated from our Practical Nursing Program. The faculty and staff recognized that Cynthia was someone special, as she received our highest student award the Margaret Helen Gast award.

Upon graduation and receipt of her diploma Cynthia took the NCLEX-PN, passed it on her 1st attempt, and received her certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Her learning and desire to advance in her chosen career did not stop there.

In 2003 she applied to and was accepted into the Med Central College of Nursing. At that time she requested a letter of reference from Tri-Rivers School of Practical Nursing and I would just like to share a couple of quotes from the letter that was sent to Med Central.
This was written by our Nursing Education Manager and shared with her permission.

“During the admission phase to our program, I found Cynthia to be enthusiastic and responsible. During her personal interview, I remember a bright, cheerful individual with a positive goal in mind. …Cynthia was always well prepared; an active participant in class, often sought out by other students. The Nursing Faculty comments were always positive regarding her clinical evaluations. Strong communication skills, well-organized, critical thinking skills, advocate for her assigned patient / resident, team player. Always willing to help another student or a staff member.”

Cynthia was accepted at Med Central and in 2007 graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Nursing, passed the NCLEX-RN, also on her 1st attempt, and received licensure as a Registered Nurse. She then continued her education by being accepted into the University of
Phoenix’s Masters in Nursing Program and in 2010 graduated with a MSN/ED degree.

As Cynthia was continuing her studies, she was not just studying and learning new skills, but juggling work and education. Cynthia’s work experience includes working as a STNA at Marion General Hospital, as an LPN at area care centers, working as an LPN then as an RN at Heartland Rehabilitation Center, working in the Intensive Care Department at Knox Community Hospital, and being a part-time clinical instructor at Marion Technical College.

Most recently, she accepted a full-time position as the coordinator of the LPN Transitions Program at Marion Technical College.
As you can see Cynthia is living out our mission of life-long learning and continuous education. She has been one busy person and we salute her for her dedication to her studies and to her profession.
