Tri-Rivers honored Veterans with free services

14956367_10157749986215578_7467234391989011372_nTo thank area veterans Tri-Rivers Career Center students and staff provided complimentary services during the second 2016 annual “Services for Those Who Served Day” on Friday, November 11. The event was coordinated by the Social Studies Department.

Some of the services provided to veterans included:

A Soup & Salad Bar lunch provided by our Culinary Arts students in CC Bistro

 • A Wash, Wax & Vacuum vehicle service provided by our Auto technology students

• Haircuts, Manicures & Pedicures provided by our Cosmetology students

• Servicing lawn equipment including: Lawn mowers, Chain saws, weed eaters, Snow blowers and Power washers by our Ag & Industrial Power students

• Pet Grooming provided by TRCC’s Veterinary Sciences program

• Portraits were taken by Digital Media & Entertainment students

• Health checks of vital signs were provided by our Health Careers Academy students

Computer safety inspections were performed by our Computer Networking students

• Criminal Justice demonstrations were held for Veterans and their families about student preparation for military and or police work

LPN to RN grads achieve 100% passage of NCLEX

The goal of the Tri-Rivers LPN to RN program at Tri-Rivers Center for Adult Education is two-fold.
“First of all, we want our graduates to successfully obtain licensure as a Registered Nurse. Secondly, our students also receive education that focuses on the professional environment and current practice issues including evidence-based practice and patient experience, in order to make them successful employees for today’s health care agencies,” said Dr. Emeline Kelly, Health & Public Safety Programs Director for Tri-Rivers.
“We also place importance of continuing education by instructing our students that it is an expectation that they will obtain further education, minimally, a baccalaureate degree,” said Dr. Kelly. “Additionally, we hold our faculty and staff to a high standard, relying on current practice and innovative educational strategies.”
Dr. Kelly attributes the high passage rate to working one on one with students and offering unparalleled support for students during their training. In 2014 the program was the only RN program in Ohio to achieve a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX, in 2015 they had 95.6%. This year 100%.

Kelly explained that they look at each individual student and work hard to support their goals of becoming a healthcare professional. “Each student is different. We recognize those differences and provide the support that helps them succeed.”

General Mills Connects with Culinary Arts

General Mills recently spent some time at Tri-Rivers working with our Culinary Arts Instructor Sheila Hamm and her students. Here is what they had to say about our wonderful chef and her program: Our K12 Connection took place in the Tri-Rivers Career Center  in Marion, Ohio. They have lovely meeting facilities there with catering provided by the high school culinary classes. The Chef Instructor there is Chef Sheila Hamm. She is a small chef who has been the larger than life nurturing force of nature behind the program for more than 20 years. I’ve done prep in dozens maybe even hundreds of kitchens in my career.

Tri-Rivers Nursing Receives $296,000 in grants

gradsTri-Rivers School of Nursing recently received two grants—one for $199,909 the Practical Nursing Program and one for $96,649 for the LPN to RN program— through the Ohio Board of Nursing’s Nurse Education Grant Program (NEGP), according to Emeline Kelly, Nursing Administrator for Tri-Rivers.

The purpose of the grants is to address the nursing shortage within the State of Ohio by supporting nurse education programs in their efforts to increase enrollment capacity of nursing students and nursing educators, explained Kelly. “With the $96,640 grant, we plan to increase enrollment into our LPN to RN Transition program by implementing a 60-week evening LPN to RN program. The additional funding from the grant will assist in the implementation of this program, hiring faculty to teach it and developing methods to recruit students.”

Tri-Rivers LPN to RN School provides academic knowledge and clinical skills needed to become a Registered Nurse,” said Kelly. “It prepares students for a career transition from a Licensed Practical Nurse to a Registered Nurse. At completion of the program, graduates are provided with skills and knowledge to sit for the NCLEX-RN, become licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse.”

Tri-Rivers LPN to RN program was recently recognized by the Ohio Board of Nursing for being the only RN program in the state of Ohio with 10 or more candidates for 2014 that achieved a 100% pass rate of the NCLEX (National Council Examination), said Kelly. “And for 2015 we are looking at around a 95 plus percent passage rate. I am proud of our staff who go that extra mile to make sure students succeed.”

Kelly also attributes the high passage rate to working one on one with students and offering unparalleled support for students during their training.  Kelly explained that they look at each individual student and work hard to support their goals of becoming a healthcare professional. “Each student is different. “The funds will also be used to develop and implement a nursing refresher course that will assist current LPNs to improve their nursing practice while at the same time improving their chances for successfully completing the LPN to RN entrance test,” said Kelly.

The $199,909 grant for the Practical Nursing program will be used to expand the Student Success Center to include a faculty improvement program and a student recruitment program this will include hiring one full-time and two part-time faculty members. “The students will be empowered to take an active role in their learning which ultimately impacts student retention and graduation rates.  The addition of the faculty improvement program will help achieve greater retention of our faculty members as well as improving success with student outcomes,” said Kelly.

Kelly said the Success Center will continue to provide the Classroom Plus Program (Tutoring), PsychoMOTOR Running Skills Labs Assistance, and the U-Turn program that assists students in study skills, time management, test preparation and test-taking skills.

“Tri-Rivers offers student centered Healthcare programs for adults, said Kelly. “Our programs are recognized statewide. Along with our PN and LPN to RN programs we offer Patient Care Technician, IV Therapy, Nurse Aide, Medical Coding and Phlebotomy Tech programs and classes.”

Join Us For Open House Thursday, Dec. 10

Tri-Rivers invites you to their 40th Anniversary Open House, Thursday, December 10, 2015, 5:30-7:30pm. The event is open to the public. “All of our career tech labs and academic classrooms will be open during the evening with demonstrations and contests in full swing. I hope people take this opportunity to tour through the building and ask questions,” said Ellen Messenger, director of communications. “We always say Tri-Rivers is a school where you are allowed to, inspired to, and expected to be amazing. We truly believe that and I think you’ll see that when you come to Open House.”

“We are encouraging sophomores interested in attending Tri-Rivers next year to come and bring people who care about them and their futures,” said Bobby Gossom, career connections coordinator. “Along with the lab and classroom activities, I’ll be available to assist future students and their parents with questions about programs, college credits and career planning.”

“Sophomores planning to attend the Career Center next year will have the opportunity to complete their online applications—with assistance from TRCC guidance counselors—in the Tri-Rivers computer lab at Open House.  “They will receive a mug for completing it during the Open House and be entered in a prize drawing,” said Sherrie Dunn, lead guidance counselor. “Some programs fill up fast and I highly recommend students get their applications in early.”

Gossom said the Open House also offers middle school students and their parents an opportunity to check out all the programs and changes at Tri-Rivers. “We recently had 8th graders in for tours. They can return with their parents to show them around the school. This will assist the students—and their parents—as they plan for their high school years.”

“We hope everyone will join us—if you haven’t seen Tri-Rivers in awhile, you really haven’t seen Tri-Rivers!” said Messenger. “There will be prize drawings in all of the labs, as well as culinary delights in celebration of our anniversary.”

The Career Center offers the following programs: Veterinary Science, Digital Media & Entertainment, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Hospitality, Healthcare Professions, Criminal Justice, Computer Networking Electronics Technologies (CNET), Engineering Technologies, Advanced Machining, Welding & Fabrication, Automotive Technology and Ag & Industrial Power Technology. Culinary Arts Grad Matt Smith Honored

Matt Smith

Culinary Arts Graduate Chef Matthew Smith, executive chef, Sheraton Columbus on Capitol Square, received the American Culinary Federation’s (ACF) Highest Award at a presentation in Orlando, Florida recently.

At the National Convention in Orlando, Chef Smith received the Presidential Medallion. The Presidential Medallion is the highest award in the ACF. It is awarded to members who exemplify culinary excellence and leadership, and have contributed their knowledge, skills and expertise to the advancement of the culinary profession. Congratulations to Tri-Rivers Graduate Matt Smith.

Smith is the executive chef at the  Sheraton Columbus on Capitol Square, Columbus, Ohio. He is a member of the ACF Columbus Chapter.

“As a 2001 Alumni of the Culinary program, the stepping stone in my education/career that Tri-Rivers has offered me has proven to be one of the best decisions that I could have made in my life,” said Smith. “After the program I was able to attend Hocking College to further my education—an opportunity that I might not have been capable of with just my high school diploma. The keen focus of the teachers with a special mention to Chef Hamm allowed me to see the talent and an eye for leadership hidden inside of me. Motivating me with their precisely guided career oriented encouragement and attention to detail; I have worked my way through the ranks of a professional kitchen.”

Currently the Executive Chef of my second property and responsible for millions in food revenue annually, I simply cannot picture my life without some of the tools that Tri-Rivers offered me a short time ago. One of my most recent initiatives is to further impact successful careers choices and develop stronger relationships at the Career Tech level with my ties in the industry.
