Tri-Rivers Senior Recognition has always been a wonderful evening of celebration held at the historic Marion Palace Theatre. This year, with the COVID-19 pandemic, things will have to happen differently. Like our Seniors, all of us at Tri-Rivers are sad to forgo this tradition.
However, most important to us is the safety and well-being of our students, their families, our staff and community members. We have been recognizing our Seniors on our Social Media and reaching out to them in different ways. 

Although we are not planning a ceremony, we are going to hold 

Senior Portfolio Pick-Up Days, 

May 29-June 9 in the Tri-Rivers Auditorium, on the west side of our building. 

There will be designated time slots for each program.

 In order to keep our students and staff safe, these guidelines must be followed.

…Park in the West Parking Lot outside of the Auditorium.

…Remain in their vehicles until our Student Resource Officer, Deputy Layne, directs them to enter the Auditorium thru the West Auditorium Doors. Masks must be worn. Hand sanitizer will be provided. Temperatures will be taken.

…Students will enter one at time. Seniors may bring one adult with them into the Auditorium to be their “photographer” to take a photo of them with their portfolio/awards in front of the Tri-Rivers backdrop, if they wish to do that.  When the Senior exits, there will be another backdrop outside in the parking lot for a family photo (Limit 4 members with Senior).

What is Portfolio Pickup Day?
…An opportunity to connect with your Career Tech Instructor and Principal Solis. (No physical contact, but lots of waves and well wishing!)
…A time to pick up a bag of goodies (the bags will be on a table with your name), including:

• Your Portfolio, which contains important certificates, honors, competencies, résumés
• A keepsake T-shirt
• A keepsake program/newsletter
• Awards
• Messages from Staff
• And more!

Again, please know that we would have loved to have had Senior Recognition 2020 at The Palace, but with the safety measures in place, that is not possible. Know that we miss you, we love you and you will always be part of the Tri-Rivers Family! 

We are also working hard to create a memorable video filled with messages, awards, special moments & more!  It will debut Thursday, May 28 at 7pm on our social media, our tririvers.com website and YouTube channel.

Drug Free Hire Me Rally in downtown Marion Ohio

TRCC’s Drug Free. Hire Me! Rally  draws over 600 teens to downtown Marion

Drug Free Hire Me Rally dance contest in downtown Marion OhioThe first ever Drug Free. Hire Me!™ rally—a Tri-Rivers Career Center Initiative—drew more than 600 students to Founders Park in downtown Marion, Ohio, on a cool but sunny October 24th.  The teens, holding Drug Free. Hire Me!™ signs, have pledged to live drug-free lifestyles. This event was a high-energy celebration of their commitment. It included student-led contests, county and city proclamations, interactive games, and impactful speeches.

“This rally and the students’ willingness to be drug tested and become role models and productive citizens, makes a statement about our area,” said event organizer, Ellen Messenger, director of communications for Tri-Rivers. “Marion and all of Ohio has been hard hit by the opiate crisis; we want to break the stigma and let everyone know that’s not who we are and that’s not what our future is about. These students are the change agents.”

Andrew Chwalik, co-owner and operator of Topped Ice Cream in downtown Marion, and the keynote speaker for the event, said it best when he told the teens:

“We all live in a connected world and every single one of us here will be making an impact. We are the future of this world and of this state, this city and this community. We are the ones making the change; making the future that we want to see. It is important that every one of you understands that. It starts right now. Make those positive decisions so that you can make our world a better place for all of us and our children and our children’s children.”

Chwalik armed the students with four ways to battle peer pressure:

• Find your values. Live a healthy lifestyle. Stick to your values for the rest of your life.
• Surround yourself with good people.
• Build your army of supporters. If you ever need support when making a big decision, reference your army of supporters. Let them mentor you so you can avoid negative peer pressure.
• Practice your courage. Get out of your comfort zone. Do something that helps build your courage.

Tri-Rivers’ 300 plus students, who belong to the Career Center’s Drug Free. Hire Me!™ club, were joined by students in Teen Institute clubs from Marion City, Pleasant, Elgin, River Valley, and Ridgedale schools, as well as students from Cardington-Lincoln in Morrow County.

“We started our Drug Free. Hire Me!™ club three years ago to encourage students to choose drug-free lifestyles in order to be prepared for employment and healthy productive lives. It is exciting to see all of these area students here today,” said Chuck Speelman, superintendent for Tri-Rivers.

Marion Mayor Scott Schertzer said, “It is imperative that an organized approach for a drug-free lifestyle is provided and encouraged for our high school students.”

County Commissioner Kerr Murray agreed, “As parents, educators, mentors, employers, healthcare professionals, law enforcement officials, faith and community leaders, we need to support drug prevention programs.”

Messenger said this event was made possible by tremendous community support and a cadre of volunteers. Sponsors included the Marion Community Foundation and OhioHealth. Partners included: Tri-Rivers Career Center, Teen Institute, OhioMeansJobs-Marion, City of Marion, Downtown Marion, County of Marion, Marion City Police Department/MPACT and area schools.

B.J. Gruber, police lieutenant/public information office/MPACT coordinator told the students he was proud of all of them for taking this step.”

“I’ve been in Marion almost 15 years and have never been more proud in participating in an event than I was in the Drug Free Rally,” said Ron Meade, Workforce Development & Supportive Services Administrator, Marion County Job and Family Services.

“For us as students, this event allowed us to take pride in being drug free and to show everyone who we are and that we are taking responsibility for our actions,” said Kristina Lee, a Tri-Rivers Construction Trades Academy/Criminal Justice student and one of the three emcees for the event, along with Max Russell in Tri-Rivers’ RAMTEC Engineering Technologies and Andrew Schoppelrei, in Computer Networking Electronics Technologies.

Chwalik thanked the teens for being the change and “starting your journey to make our world a better place. Your story starts now and this is chapter one. Go!”

Veterans Day Services for Marion Area Veterans

Veterans! Service Day For Those Who Served Friday, Nov 8

Veterans have given so much for us; it is time that we give back.

To thank veterans of Marion and surrounding communities, Tri-Rivers Career Center will be providing complimentary services to Veterans furnished by our students in their career labs.

In order to accommodate Veterans attending the event, we ask that appointments or  reservations be made in advance for each of the services you wish to receive.

FREE Services Available for Veterans include:

•  By reservation: A Soup & Salad Bar lunch provided by our Culinary Arts students in CC Bistro serving from 10:30am-1pm.

•  By appointment: A Wash, Wax & Vacuum vehicle service provided by our Auto Technology students, vehicle drop off between 8-9am, vehicle pick-up 2:15pm.

• By appointment: Esthetics 2 will be doing services 1st/2nd period (8:30-9:00am appointment times) Manicures, Hand/Arm massages & Gel polish application. Cosmetology 1 will be doing scalp treatments with Essential oils or haircuts. AM lab 9:09 start

Brief:
Through TechCred, businesses can identify the specific qualifications they need and employees they want to upskill toward a more advanced position. In partnership with a training provider, the employer can apply online at TechCred.Ohio.Gov. The state will reimburse up to $2,000 of training upon completion of a credential.
An initial list of eligible credentials is provided, but employers can request a credential be added to the eligible list by submitting an application for TechCred to be reviewed by a panel of stakeholders.
The online application period runs October 1, 2019 to October 31, 2019. TechCred is a competitive, merit-based program. 
TechCred fulfills a commitment made by Governor DeWine and Lt. Governor Husted to fund the completion of 10,000 microdegrees each year in order to aid in closing the skills gap for growing technology jobs.

No matter your industry, technology is having an impact on the future of your business and the nature of your work. Ohio’s TechCred program gives businesses the chance to upskill current or future employees to help them qualify for a better job in today’s tech-infused economy.

What is TechCred?
The program funds up to 20,000 technology-focused credentials over the next two years.

Description: This course is meant for the maintenance technician that needs hands on exposure to hydraulics pneumatic system found in the modern manufacturing facility. Student hands on labs are meant to expose the students to various problems and design consideration in the hydraulic systems through frequent hands on labs.

It all starts with FAFSA

Tri-Rivers Financial Aid information and FAFSA Completion Session

Tri-Rivers Career Center Financial Aid Information and FAFSA Completion Session is Thursday, October 17, 2019, 6-8 pm at Tri-Rivers.

Ohio State University and Marion Technical College reps will be speaking on college financial planning, including an overview of all potential sources of financial aid available statewide and nationally for students attending any two or four year college or university. This portion of the event is open to students from all TRCC grades and their parents or guardians.

After the conclusion of the information session, we will help seniors and their parent/s and/or guardians actually complete and submit the 2020-2021 Free Application for Federal and State Aid (FAFSA).

Bring all of the following documents/information you may have available for you and your parents/guardians for the FAFSA Completion session:

• 2018 Student and Parent Federal Tax Returns
• 2018 Student and Parent W2s (unless self-employed)
• A listing of any other types of untaxed income or benefits received in 2018
• Documentation from you and/or your parent’s case worker with the total amount of TANF received for 2018
• Supplemental Social Security Disability received in 2018
• The total amount of child support paid and/or received in 2018
• The total amount of Federal Work Study received in 2018 (for current college students)
• Bank statements
• Investment records
• Student and parental Social Security numbers
• FSA ID – Both the student and one parent each need to create their own Federal Student Aid username and password at https://fsaid.ed.gov at least three days prior to the event. If you are unable to do so, do not worry, we can help you complete and submit the FAFSA, and you will just need to sign the FAFSA with your FSA IDs later. This will be explained at the workshop.

Make A Difference Day

UW/TRCC Make A Difference Day Sept. 27

Eleven years ago with a special collaboration between Tri-Rivers and United Way of Marion an event where our students give back was created—with an annual Make A Difference Day.

“Tri-Rivers students continually give back to the community through numerous service projects, including today’s special event,” said Tad Douce, Director of Innovation and Technology for Tri-Rivers.

More than 250 Tri-Rivers Seniors and staff members will participate in the this annual tradition, today, Friday, Sept. 27, 2019.

Douce continued, “This is an excellent opportunity for our community to observe all of the many talented and giving young people who attend Tri-Rivers. The students’ goal is to make an immediate and positive impact in the area.”

Tri-Rivers gives special thanks to the United Way Team for all of their coordination in making this event happen.

“United Way is proud to partner with Tri-Rivers again this year for Make a Difference Day,” said Leslie Schneider, Resource Development Director. “We believe volunteering is crucial for the betterment of our community. United Way’s connection with local non-profit and civic organizations allows to us to help identify volunteer needs and link students at Tri-Rivers with those opportunities.”

• Advanced Machining, Cosmetology and Esthetics will be at the Marion Senior Center

• CNET will be downtown working on Flower Pots
• Cosmetology will be hold a spa day for Turning Point clients in their lab at Tri-Rivers
• Culinary Arts will be prepping for the Heifer Festival
• Construction Trades Academy and Welding will be at the Women’s Club
• Interactive Media will be working with Morrow County’s United Way creating a commercial
• Engineering Tech students will be at the Center Street Health Clinic in downtown
• Health Careers Academy 1 and 2 will be at Kingston and Primrose working with residents there
• Health Careers Academy will also be at Primrose
• Vet Science will be at Providence Therapy Horse Farm in Morral cleaning stalls and doing barn work
