Tri-Rivers/RAMTEC students visit Honda, see ASIMO!

Honda field trip 2015Engineering Technology high school students in RAMTEC at Tri-Rivers Career Center were invited to attend Honda’s ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility) demonstration, Thursday, September 17 in Marysville.

“This was a great opportunity for our students to see how humans and robots interact in the manufacturing world,” said Brad Pottkotter, their engineering instructor.

“Honda provided our students with the opportunity to see leading edge technology,” said Ritch Ramey, RAMTEC Coordinator. “Seeing ASIMO in action gives our students a chance to dream and make it happen.”

Ramey explained that ASIMO is designed to help people. “It is the culmination of two decades of humanoid robotics research by Honda engineers. ASIMO can walk and run on uneven slopes and surfaces. It can also climb stairs, reach for and grasp objects. ASIMO comprehends and responds to simple voice commands. It has the ability to recognize the face of a select group of individuals. It truly is amazing.”

Pottkotter said ASIMO provided a springboard for other Honda product development. “My students got to see the future of robots today.

They also had the opportunity to visit Honda’s Heritage Center, that displays a collection of Honda products, including power sports, automobiles, power equipment, as well as aviation and robotics. It also has displays highlighting major milestones in Honda’s history.”

“Our Engineering students were able to see that the Honda Training Center looks very similar to RAMTEC where they are training,” said Ramey. “Seeing the history of Honda and the latest Honda innovations is very beneficial as they plan their careers in the engineering field.”

While touring Honda the RAMTEC students enjoyed talking to Drew Mosley, a graduate of Tri-Rivers Engineering Tech program. Drew currently works as an industrial trainer at Honda. “It is nice when our current students can see where our graduates are and what they are doing,” said Pottkotter. “It helps them to plan their future.”

Ramey said Honda has a permanent ASIMO display at Disneyland in California in their “Innoventions” Center–”Say Hello to Honda’s ASIMO.” To learn more about ASIMO visit ASIMO.Honda.com. Tri-Rivers 2015

Culinary Arts Grad Matt Smith Honored

Matt Smith

Culinary Arts Graduate Chef Matthew Smith, executive chef, Sheraton Columbus on Capitol Square, received the American Culinary Federation’s (ACF) Highest Award at a presentation in Orlando, Florida recently.

At the National Convention in Orlando, Chef Smith received the Presidential Medallion. The Presidential Medallion is the highest award in the ACF. It is awarded to members who exemplify culinary excellence and leadership, and have contributed their knowledge, skills and expertise to the advancement of the culinary profession. Congratulations to Tri-Rivers Graduate Matt Smith.

Smith is the executive chef at the  Sheraton Columbus on Capitol Square, Columbus, Ohio. He is a member of the ACF Columbus Chapter.

“As a 2001 Alumni of the Culinary program, the stepping stone in my education/career that Tri-Rivers has offered me has proven to be one of the best decisions that I could have made in my life,” said Smith. “After the program I was able to attend Hocking College to further my education—an opportunity that I might not have been capable of with just my high school diploma. The keen focus of the teachers with a special mention to Chef Hamm allowed me to see the talent and an eye for leadership hidden inside of me. Motivating me with their precisely guided career oriented encouragement and attention to detail; I have worked my way through the ranks of a professional kitchen.”

Currently the Executive Chef of my second property and responsible for millions in food revenue annually, I simply cannot picture my life without some of the tools that Tri-Rivers offered me a short time ago. One of my most recent initiatives is to further impact successful careers choices and develop stronger relationships at the Career Tech level with my ties in the industry.

Tri-Rivers Opens Health Careers Academy for 2015-16

High School students interested in Healthcare Careers now have new and enhanced options with the creation of a Health Careers Academy at Tri-Rivers Career Center.

“Tri-Rivers Health Careers Academy will prepare students for employment in exciting and satisfying careers and also prepare them to continue their education at two and four-year colleges with college credits and industry recognized credentials,” according to Emeline Kelly, Director of Nursing for Tri-Rivers Center For Adult Education. Kelly created the curriculum so students could gain an important foundation of knowledge and skills for health care careers.

The current Healthcare Professions program will become part of the Health Careers Academy. What the Academy adds is new health care tracks, said Kelly. “There will be additional industry recognized certifications, work-based learning, more college credits and if they continue on into the Practical Nursing program at Tri-Rivers Center for Adult Education, they will have completed prerequisites and have advanced standing.”

During students’ junior year, they will be in a Pre-Nursing program where they will have courses in Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, Math for Meds, Computer Applications, Nutrition, and Learning Strategies. They will also earn the State Tested Nurse Aide (STNA). “Passage of the STNA not only earns them college credit but also is one way to meet the new Ohio Department of Education graduation requirement,” said Sherrie Dunn, Lead Guidance Counselor for Tri-Rivers. “This level one program is also available as a Senior Only program, which means a student can come as a senior and complete the courses.”

For those who come as juniors, during their Senior Year—Level 2—they will select from two available tracks. The first track is Medical Assisting where they can earn their Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) credential, said Kelly. In this track they will take EKG Technician, Phlebotomy, OSHA Ten Safety & Health Administration, Basic Medial Billing & Coding, Computer Applications, Legal & Ethical Issues in Health Care. Many of these courses provide industry-recognized credentials.

Medical Office/Dental Assisting is the second track available. Students will earn their Medical Assisting Certification in this track while taking Medical Office Procedures, Infection Control & Communicable Diseases, OSHA 10 Safety & Health Administration, Dental Assisting Procedures, Computer Applications and Legal & Ethical Issues in Health Care. “We are excited to offer Dental Assisting,” said Dunn. “We know from talking to students in our associate schools this is an area of high interest.”

In both tracks many of the courses offer industry recognized credentials, which puts students ahead of the game in their careers, said Kelly.

Because Health Care is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the United States, we believe the addition of a Health Careers Academy will serve our area well, said Kelly. “We are preparing students for careers that are in high demand.”

According to the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics, of the 30 fastest growing occupations in the entire labor market, about half are jobs in the health care fields. These are jobs that pay well and offer students who want to work directly or indirectly with patients many exciting options, said Kelly.

Teachers learn to teach about Robotics

RAMTEC Camp July_web 3571Several area teachers are at RAMTECohio in Marion this week learning how to introduce robotics to elementary, middle school and high school students through engaging, hands-on activities. Several young people have joined them for the camp.

Leading the instruction is Jeff Branson educational outreach coordinator at SparkFun Electronics, along with his wife, Beverly Ball, a welding/art teacher and founder of TinkerBelles, an all-girls maker club.

Monday, July 27 the camp kicked off with a “teachers only” session. Then days 2 and 3, students joined the teachers. The last day will conclude with another “teachers only” session.

The camp is sponsored through Straight A and Honda grants. Its goal is to add art to the STEM curriculum and interest students as young as third grade.

Teachers learned new technology, how to engage students and present material. Students learned programming, problem solving, mathematical thinking, and had the opportunity to challenge themselves while participating in group activities. They even learned how to do origami.
