Tri-Rivers Culinary Arts claims spot on Elite 50

elite artTri-Rivers Career Center’s Culinary Arts program was named to the Elite 50 list of secondary school hospitality programs in the United States for 2014-2015.

Every year, the Elite 50 recognizes secondary schools that have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in hospitality education. Those schools exhibit strong hospitality enrollment and influence in their community. They excel in the areas of culinary arts, baking and pastry arts, an/or hospitality management.

More than 350 schools were invited to apply for the honor of being named to the Elite 50 list. The application included: an original recipe with photos of restaurant management design, two essays from students on the topic “Why I want to pursue a career in hospitality” and a video, brochure and additional information about the school’s program.

Additional consideration was given to schools that operate a restaurant and/or offer catering services as part of their hospitality training, according to Tri-Rivers Chef Sheila Hamm, instructor of the program at TRCC.

A team from the National Center of Hospitality Studies at Sullivan University oversees the selection process for the Elite 50 list.

Tri-Rivers Culinary Arts students operate C.C. Bistro, C.C. Beans Coffee Cafe and C.C. Buns Bakery; they also cater events.

Ohio Department of Health honors Tri-Rivers for healthy practices

 The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) and the Healthy Ohio Business Council (HOBC) will recognize 46 Ohio employers for healthy worksite practices during the 11th annual Healthy Ohio Healthy Worksite Awards ceremony Thursday, January 29, 2015 at the Hyatt Regency in Columbus. At the ceremony Tri-Rivers will receive the only gold award—the top award—in the small business category. Pemberton will present Tri-Rivers’ best practices at the event.

“The Ohio Worksite award is an opportunity for Tri-Rivers to be recognized for its continued commitment to employee health,” said Chris Pemberton, Health Services Coordinator for Tri-Rivers. “The award showcases the outstanding efforts and activities of the Tri-River Wellness Committee and the Administration’s commitment to ensuring a healthy work environment.”

“Our Wellness Committee’s goal is to constantly evaluate the effectiveness and satisfaction of programs,” said Pemberton. “I feel Tri-Rivers exemplifies a workplace striving for healthy outcomes with its continued commitment to offer outstanding wellness events. Our Administration Team fully supports the activities of the Wellness Committee and actively participates in the sponsored events.”

Some of the activities include: Weight Maintenance Challenge from November through January; Biggest Loser Group Challenge from January through March; Weekly Fitness Challenges; Healthy Snacks, Quarterly Newsletter, Summer “Move It” Challenge; as well as maintaining a workout facility, sponsoring co-ed volleyball and holding Zumba classes. Pemberton said all activities encourage permanent healthy lifestyle changes.

“Poor nutrition, inactive and sedentary lifestyles, tobacco use, and alcohol and drug use limit our potential to be productive Ohioans. This is why a comprehensive approach to preventive health and wellness at worksites is an essential part of improving both the health of Ohioans and the overall success of our state,” said Dr. Andrew Wapner, Chief of the Bureau of Healthy Ohio at ODH.

“Healthy Ohio Healthy Worksite Award winners are leading the way in this effort by making a healthy work environment a priority for their employees.” A total of 71 companies, cities and townships applied for the 2014 awards, which recognize Ohio employers who demonstrate a commitment to employee wellness through comprehensive worksite health promotion and wellness programs.

Applicants are scored on the extent their wellness programs facilitate and encourage employee health, enhance productivity and ensure a healthy work environment.

“Employee health and wellness efforts result in major benefits for both employer and employee,” Helene Szczerba, chair of HOBC said. “Positive returns on investment are realized in employees who improve their health resulting in decreased rates of absenteeism and increased productivity. Employers also realize reductions in health care costs and an overall increase in productivity and job satisfaction.”

 

Open House, Thursday, Dec 4, 5:30-7pm


Tri-Rivers Annual Open House is Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014, 5:30-7pm. The event is open to the public.

There will be demonstrations and contests  in the career tech labs, door prizes in each lab as well as holiday cookies!

Sophomores are encouraged to stop in the Computer Lab during Open House and fill in their online application. Student Services will be available to assist them. All students who submit their application by midnight tonight will be in a drawing for a very cool prize!!!

Attendees can stop by C. C. Beans for a hot drink and C.C. Bistro for hot soup on a cold night.

Santa’s Li’l Shoppe will also be open. Bring your  young ones and have our elves help them do their holiday shopping at the budget you set. Santa’s Li’l Shoppe will also be open Friday, Dec. 5 4-7pm and Saturday, Dec. 6, 10am-4pm

 

 

NTHS Fall 2014 Induction Ceremony

NTHS Fall Inductees

The 2014 Fall National Technical Honor Society Induction was held Thursday, November 21, in the Giauque Auditorium at Tri-Rivers Career Center.

Eleven new members were inducted into : Jessica Akers, Healthcare Professions, Marion City; Tyler Austin, Computer Networking Electronics Technology (CNET), Elgin; Velvet Collins, Digital Media & Entertainment, Cardington; Jesse Davis, Auto Technology, Marion City; Brandon Drake, Culinary Arts, Mt. Gilead; Erin Graves, Veterinary Science, Cardington; Kendra Grogg, Cosmetology, Highland; Kayla Helton, Healthcare Professions, Highland; Ceranda Pearson, Ag & Industrial Power, Cardington; Dylan Reynolds, Healthcare Professions, Marion City and Mia Walter, Public Safety Services, Elgin.

The speaker for the evening event was Lucas Bledsoe, Tri-Rivers Automotive Technology instructor and a graduate of Tri-Rivers, as well as a National Technical Honor Society member. He spoke to the group about his experiences and how important NTHS was to him in he career.

NTHS’s mission is to honor student achievement and leadership in career and technical education, promote educational excellence, award scholarships, and enhance career opportunities for the NTHS membership.

Area Veterans Honored

Tri-Rivers saluted area Veterans Tuesday, November 11, 2014 with two assemblies held in the Giauque Auditorium at the Career Center. The featured speakers were husband and wife, retired Colonel Kenneth W. Fryman, U. S. Air Force and retired Colonel Mary K. Fryman, U.S. Air Force.

Colonel Mary Fryman served over 30 years of active duty to her country, starting out as a commissioned Second Lieutenant in 1972. Prior to that she had earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the Texas Christian University in 1970. She later earned a Master of Arts Degree in Guidance and Counseling from Ball State University in 1975. Over the years, she had several tours of duty. In 1993 she became the Chief Nurse, Operating Room Services at Wilford Hall Medical Center and later the Director of Surgery and finally as Commander, Aeromedical-Dental Group. In 1998, she became the Hospital Commander at Malmstrom AFB, Great Falls, Montana. She was reassigned to Wright-Patterson AFB as the Regional HMO(TRICARE) Clinical Director. She retired in 2002.

Colonel Kenneth Fryman also served around 30 years of active duty. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from The Ohio State University in 1970 and a Masters in Business Administration from Webster University in 1981. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in December 1970 through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). He was a Personnel Officer with a wide variety of assignments that included tours of duty in San Antonia, Thailand, West Germany, New Mexico, Nebraska, Ohio and Montana. He retired in 2000 as the base Inspector General at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana.

Both retired Colonels said their military experiences were challenging and rewarding. They currently live in Springfield, Ohio and have two adult children—Kevin and Kari. Kevin is a Caption in the United States Army and recently returned from his third tour in Afghanistan.

The veterans and their families were served breakfast in C.C. Bistro, then escorted by students to the assemblies. The student-led assembly recognized the veterans’ service with essays, songs by preschoolers, and featured speakers.

A representative from Honor Flight recognized the continued support of Tri-Rivers’ students and staff in their fundraising efforts to send Veterans to Washington DC to see the memorial.

The event was organized by the Social Studies Department.

 

 

 

Tri-Rivers selected as SME PRIME Site


(DEARBORN, Mich., Oct. 15, 2014)
– The SME Education Foundation’s Partnership Response In Manufacturing Education (PRIME) initiative is pleased to announce it has selected six new high schools to participate in its program, including Tri-Rivers Career Center/RAMTEC.  PRIME creates connections between manufacturing high school students, educators and the industry to grow and train the next-generation workforce — all while driving interest and awareness in manufacturing.

“In just a few years, the PRIME model and network has proven its value and success,” said Josh Cramer, senior educational program officer, SME Education Foundation. “To date, roughly three-quarters of PRIME graduates enter the manufacturing field or pursue manufacturing or STEM-related postsecondary education and training. This validates the belief that engaging high school students and providing them with hands-on access to manufacturing curriculum and tools can drive interest in pursuing degrees to support the industry.”

Launched in 2011, the PRIME approach provides the opportunity for students, teachers and schools to have access to real-life manufacturing education and tools, as well as engage with manufacturing companies in the local community. The newly selected schools will begin the PRIME program for the 2015-16 school year.

Along with Tri-Rivers, these  are the new PRIME schools:

  • Capital High School, Helena, Montana.
  • Jeffersontown High School, Louisville, Kentucky.
  • John Glenn High School, Norwalk, California.
  • Middleton High School, Tampa, Florida.
  • Rocklin High School, Rocklin, California.

Schools benefit from PRIME via funding for equipment, software and professional development, as well as manufacturing/STEM-focused camps, extracurricular activities and scholarship opportunities. Schools in the national PRIME network also have direct connectivity to SME, the SME Education Foundation and its industry and education partners.

Companies that support PRIME impact the community by providing real-world connections for the instructors and students, as well as ensuring a pipeline of more qualified employees for their organization. The funding and manufacturing industry involvement allows PRIME schools to increase opportunities for students to engage in the careers and community and to collaborate with the industry in real-world scenarios. The Aviation Academy in Newport News, Virginia, has been a PRIME school since 2013. It is dedicated to creating a classroom environment to immerse students in STEM curriculum and hands-on manufacturing experiences. The Aviation Academy also partners with local and national SME chapters for various initiatives and interaction.

“Participating as a PRIME school ensures our graduates are one step closer to becoming college and career-ready with strong skills and a fascination with the technology that is so highly sought after in the 21st century workplace,” said Aaron Smith, program director, the Aviation Academy. “I am proud and thankful for all that SME provides for our students. SME plays a vital role in mentoring and transforming manufacturing and STEM education.”

PRIME schools are selected for their ability to be leading educational institutions in the areas of advanced manufacturing and STEM education. To maintain their designation as PRIME, schools must deliver on the mission of creating the next-generation workforce, as well as having engaged instructors, an active advisory panel and strong industry connections.

Gov. Kasich, Lt. Gov. Taylor Visit Tri-Rivers


Gov. John Kasich and Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor visited RAMTEC and Tri-Rivers Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014 on their campaign trail to re-election. They emphasized their goal to make education engaging, accessible and relevant. The governor said schools like Tri-Rivers/RAMTEC are important to Ohio. Career Technical Student  Organization (CTSO) presidents were there to greet them. They toured RAMTEC and then talked about their goals for Ohio to a group of more than 100 in the Giauque Auditorium at Tri-Rivers.
