Interactive Media program completely updated!

Above, Josh Ebert, left, and Jeff Davidson, the instructors for the Interactive Media Program. Both instructors have worked in the field for many years.

One of the programs at Tri-Rivers that has experienced rapid change is Interactive Media. It has gone from the early years of Graphic Printing, to Digital Media for a few years to its current moniker of Interactive Media.

“The program’s latest title and direction is fueled by changes in communications. In our technology-driven world interactive media surrounds everything we do; It transforms the way people share information and ideas through creative uses of technology,” explained Josh Ebert, one of two instructors for the program.

Interactive Media students work in the new state-of-the-art studio
where they are filming the morning TV news show.

“One of the coolest things has been watching the talent of the students go up and up! As enrollment rises, it’s bringing a greater variety of students and raises the bar,” said Ebert.

“With advancements in technology, creative problem solvers are in high demand,” said Ebert. “Even companies like Apple, who design products, need creative designers to work alongside their engineers. Critical thinking, like what we teach, continues to be one of the top skills we hear employers looking for.”

Ebert has over 10 years of experience in the field and is in his second year of teaching. He has had the opportunity to experience a variety of clients and projects. He can share those experiences with students. “I’ve been involved with everything from branding, to commercial videography, to software design, and more. I even started my own business and have worked to grow that the last several years.”

Interactive Media Instructor, Josh Ebert, far right, assists students on a project.

His teaching partner, Jeff Davidson, who is in his first year at Tri-Rivers, has worked in the interactive media and graphic design industry for 30 years. “I have a wealth of experience to share with the students. I have worked in almost every segment of the design industry—graphic design, web design, animation, game design, and video production to name a few. I think that having seen the evolution of the industry, I can give interesting insights to students.”

The “Dynamic Duo” (as many colleagues call them) emphasize that their brand-new lab is another major aspect that sets their program apart. It was completely rebuilt from the ground up in 2020, so it offers students access to some of the most state-of-the-art equipment in Ohio. “Access to professionals in the field, along with a lab that you truly have to see to believe, is what gives our students the best possible opportunity to be successful in this field,” said Davidson.

“Most of our students will want to go on to post-secondary educational opportunities, but our students will have a strong enough foundation that they could definitely go directly into industry,” said Davidson. “Even students who plan to continue their education will find themselves in a better position than their peers in their college major after taking this program.”

“I agree with Mr. Davidson, additional education certainly opens doors and can give students an edge, but it’s not essential,” said Ebert. “That’s the nice thing about interactive media, there are a lot of opportunities at every level.”

Dylan Farrell, a junior from Mount Gilead, said, “I’ve always been interested in movies and how they are made. I’m learning all of that here—special effects, the mechanics of movies, animating and video. Our lab is huge with different rooms for different areas of study. Plus, I’m getting valuable certifications like Photoshop and Illustrator. Whatever, your creative interests are, you’ll fit in here.”

“I love it here. The staff are good to students; they care about us as individuals,” said Skye Shipman, a junior from Mount Gilead. “Everything is hands-on and interactive. We do a lot of critical thinking and brainstorming. Both my teachers are interested in what I want to learn.”

Tri-Rivers receives Breakfast & Beyond Recognition

Tri-Rivers recognized for resiliency and collaboration in the important work of feeding students

Tri-Rivers was one of nine school districts in Ohio to receive recognition for the 2020-2021 Breakfast & Beyond from the Ohio School Breakfast Challenge. Schools were recognized for their innovative and collaborative approach to maximize participation in meal programs, ensuring all students have access to school meals during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“At Tri-Rivers we created Grab-n-Go breakfast carts in the cafeteria and hallways, served hot breakfasts daily in the cafeteria and we packaged breakfast and lunch meals for remote learners,” said Angela Branam,  the Career Center’s Cafeteria Manager. “We wanted to ensure that all of our students have easy access to breakfast and lunch.”

“The breakfast carts allow us to maintain social distancing, catch students who are late and increase our speed of service,” said Branam. “One of the goals of increasing access to breakfast was to increase the number of students that eat breakfast every day. Students are excited about all the options and enjoy the items offered. Utilizing USDA foods for breakfast and lunch has reduced food costs. Breakfast participation has increased by 73%  by increasing food options and access to breakfast.”

Branam said the program was a collaboration between her cafeteria team, building administrators, teachers, the school nurse, students, support staff, parents and community health officials.

Branam said, “Our food service staff worked with food suppliers during the pandemic to determine types of food that could be used for meals on campus and sent home with students for remote learning. At the beginning of the school year, availability of meals and pickup times were promoted to students and parents by the communications department and building principal.”

She said, “New sanitation and food handling procedures are in place for preparation and distribution of foods. All meals and food items must be properly covered for all packaged meals sent home on remote learning days. Staff time has increased to ensure safety in preparation and packaging of meals for remote learning. The building staff and administrators have helped in the distribution of meals on remote days. Their help has been critical to ensure enough people are available to distribute meals to students.”

School districts that submitted a Breakfast & Beyond story, received a “Super Star” electronic medallion to place on their school website, menus, and other community focused communications. The medallion signifies their distinguished work in serving Breakfast & Beyond.

The Ohio School Breakfast Challenge’s mission is to increase access and participation in the School Breakfast & School Meal Programs, ensuring Ohio students start each day ready to learn. The Ohio Department of Education, American Dairy Association Mideast, Children’s Hunger Alliance and Ohio School Nutrition Association are proud sponsors of the Ohio School Breakfast Challenge.

Tri-Rivers Career Center plans to continue breakfast carts in the hall and new grab n go items on the menu next school year.

The other districts recognized included: West Geauga, Twinsburg, Painesville, Madison, Lima City, Indian Creek, Berkshire Local and Auburn Career Center.

2021 Welding Completers celebrate success

Congratulations to Tri-Rivers-Adult Education’s Welding, Fabrication & Allied Processes program completers. They were recognized at a ceremony held in the Giauque Auditorium January 20, 2021.

(Left to right in the above photo: Instructor Tom Reynolds, Welding completers: Elizabeth Santillan, Jace Chevalier, Brock Howard, Nicholas McCall and Trent Avon. Not pictured, Evan Kalbes who earned Perfect Attendance and Director of Adult Education Richard George.

What a special class! They made it through 650 hours/100 days of skills training during Covid!

Trent Avon earned the High Pressure Pipe Weld Certification—this is a difficult certification to attain and the first time a student has earned it in the Tri-Rivers program. Congratulations to Trent!

Each student received several “tough to attain” welding certificates, including Trent Avon earning the High Pressure Pipe Weld Certificate—a first! Evan Kalbes earned perfect attendance. Their main instructor Tom Reynolds said welding is an art. Watch for a more in-depth story on creative pieces these students fabricated.

Welding & Fabrication is one of the few career choices that is in high demand at all times. Since welders are needed in almost every industry, it gives them the flexibility to switch industries without changing careers. Let’s face the facts; most career choices have ups and downs.

Welding on the other hand has endless opportunities that keep fueling the demand. Welding is a career that offers more choices of industries to work in and advancement opportunities than just about any other career choice. Welders are needed in almost every industry and those who want to advance their career have the ability to do so with additional training.

A few examples of the fields in which Welders can find career opportunities: Inspection, Engineering, Robotics Education, Project Management and Sales.
