RAMTEC instructor is a finalist for national award

mark-e_updated-webTri-Rivers RAMTEC Instructor Mark Edington, who was named Ohio’s Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE)  Postsecondary Teacher of the Year earlier this year, has been selected as the 2016 Region 1 Postsecondary Teacher of the Year. He will be one of five instructors nationwide vying for the 2017 National Award at the ACTE Excellence Awards  Nov. 30th in Las Vegas, according to Larry Hickman, Tri-Rivers Chief Instructional Officer.

“This is quite an honor—a well deserved honor—for Mark,” said Hickman. “We are lucky to have his talents, experience and expertise in our RAMTEC Center. This award recognizes career and technical teachers and teacher educators who have demonstrated excellence and best practices in career and technical education at the postsecondary level.”

“Mark Edington’s dedication to career-technical education shows through his passion to share his knowledge with students,” says Christine Gardner, Ohio ACTE Executive Director. “In 2013, Edington came out of retirement to teach the new Robotics and Advanced Manufacturing Training Program at Tri Rivers Career Center. As the only dual FANUC and Motoman-Yasakawa Certified Robotic Trainer in Ohio, he possesses unique skills that he has used to prepare his students for real-life situations.”

“Using a combination of theory and hands-on practice that he has learned throughout his career, Mr. Edington teaches students to react to real-world scenarios and cultivate problem-solving skills that will help them throughout their careers,” said Hickman.  “Mr. Edington was one of the hosts of Ohio ACTE’s summer conference professional development program in 2016 and continually shares his knowledge with colleagues for the benefit of all Career Tech students.

“Over the last three years in his education career, Edington has provided 245 students with thousands of hours of training. He has been instrumental in helping to fill the skilled-labor gap, not only in his community but throughout the state, as he has provided training to instructors that will be sharing this knowledge at eight regional robotics & advanced manufacturing technology education collaborative (RAMTEC) career centers,” said Gardner.  “His unique knowledge and willingness to come out of retirement to give his time to students shows his passion for career and technical education.”

The national postsecondary teacher of the year award, along with several other ACTE Excellence Awards will be announced at the ACTE Awards Banquet, a dinner and award presentation recognizing the best CTE educators in the country.

The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) is the nation’s largest not-for-profit association committed to the advancement of education that prepares youth and adults for successful careers.

LPN to RN grads achieve 100% passage of NCLEX

2016 graduates of  Tri-Rivers LPN to RN program achieved 100% passage of the NCLEX (National Council Examination)lpn-to-rn-pix-web

The goal of the Tri-Rivers LPN to RN program at Tri-Rivers Center for Adult Education is two-fold.
“First of all, we want our graduates to successfully obtain licensure as a Registered Nurse. Secondly, our students also receive education that focuses on the professional environment and current practice issues including evidence-based practice and patient experience, in order to make them successful employees for today’s health care agencies,” said Dr. Emeline Kelly, Health & Public Safety Programs Director for Tri-Rivers.
“We also place importance of continuing education by instructing our students that it is an expectation that they will obtain further education, minimally, a baccalaureate degree,” said Dr. Kelly. “Additionally, we hold our faculty and staff to a high standard, relying on current practice and innovative educational strategies.”
Dr. Kelly attributes the high passage rate to working one on one with students and offering unparalleled support for students during their training. In 2014 the program was the only RN program in Ohio to achieve a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX, in 2015 they had 95.6%. This year 100%.

Kelly explained that they look at each individual student and work hard to support their goals of becoming a healthcare professional. “Each student is different. We recognize those differences and provide the support that helps them succeed.”

Mfg Day at TRCC RAMTEC Thursday, Oct. 13

mfg-article mfg-day-flyer-2016

Tri-Rivers RAMTEC is hosting an event to celebrate Manufacturing Day on October 13, 9am to 4pm, including a facility tour, a VEX Robotics Competition, and for the first time, an industrial robotics contest. Ritch Ramey, Engineering Coordinator for RAMTEC, said, “Students are thirsting for more real-world robotics applications experience.” He hopes the industrial robotics contest will become a national competition.

The event, sponsored by the PRIME (Partnership Response In Manufacturing Education), Honda Foundation, FANUC and Yaskawa Motoman Robotics, in coordination with Robotic Industries Association (ria), Consolidated Electric Cooperative, Inc, National Robotics Challenge, (NRC), REC Foundation and RAMTEC Vex Robotics League, is open to the public.

“We are encouraging area high school students, college students, adults and regional manufacturing technicians to attend,” said Ritch Ramey. “Our goal is to draw attention to the outstanding opportunities that a career in manufacturing can provide.

“Over the next decade, it is estimated that nearly 3.5 million U.S. manufacturing jobs will be needed and 2 million of those jobs are expected to go unfilled due to manufacturers’ inability to find talent with the required skills,” said Ramey. “These numbers dramatically underscore the importance of introducing as many people as possible to the significant role played by manufacturing in Ohio and the entire nation.”

Manufacturing Day will show students how math, science, engineering and problem solving tie into real-world applications,” said Ramey. “They will see this and experience the relationship between STEM and manufacturing and what types of careers are available in the manufacturing field.

Exhibits and demonstrations will  include: FANUC Robotics Industrial Robotics Contest, Motoman Robotics Industrial Robotics contest, Vex Starstruck contest, Fastech MasterCAM , Sandvik Tools, Lincoln Technical College, Honda, Universal Robotics, Miller Augmented Welder, National Guard Mobile trailer, Robotics Educational Contest Foundation (RECF), Lincoln Electric Welding, Parker Hydraulics, Allen-Bradley PLC,  Mitsubishi PLC and Omron PLC.

Skin Care & Construction new for 2017-18

Portrait Of Builder On Building Site With Apprentices

The new enhanced Construction Trades Academy will prepare a student for a fulfilling career and promising future in numerous construction trades.

Tri-Rivers is adding 2 new programs next year—Construction Trades Academy and Esthetics (Skin Care)
The Construction Trades Academy is an enhanced multi-trade construction two-year program. It will concentrate on construction and related careers such as roofing, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, masonry, interior finishing, estimating, blueprint reading, and framing.

During the first year, students will master the basics by working on individual and group projects, according to Larry Hickman, chief instructional officer. “The second year students will work in teams building two tiny houses with electrical and plumbing included,” said Hickman. “The students will then become trade specific in their specialization for the project—the plumber, the electrician, the framer, the finisher, the mason, the dry waller, the painter, etc.”

Skin Care is a growing career field. This one-year program is open to juniors and seniors.

The second program is Esthetics (Skin Care). This program is a one-year program open to juniors and seniors. If taken the junior year, a student could opt to take another program at Tri-Rivers their senior year.
Estheticians are responsible for maintaining the health and well-being of clients’ skin by utilizing a number of skin treatments.
“This is an exciting program that many students have asked about,” said Instructor Becky Salyer. “Students will learn to cleanse, wax, moisturize and apply makeup to enhance a person’s overall appearance. Estheticians are also taught to identify the warning signs of numerous medical conditions.”
Once they complete the skills training, they are prepared for the Ohio Board licensing exam for Esthetics, leading to immediate employment, said Salyer.

Outstanding 2016 Alumni Awards

Tri-Rivers Career Center celebrated Outstanding Alumni at the 2016 Board Dinner held at Tri-Rivers, Wednesday, March 17, 2016. Recipients included: Adult Center Graduate Carey Rhoades and Career Center Graduates Vince Reed and Tonya Boyd.

The gallery was not found!

Carey Rhoades was the Adult Education outstanding alumnus. She was recognized for fulfilling Tri-Rivers mission of “being a responsible community member and embracing learning as a lifelong process,” Adult Director Richard George said.

Rhoades began her journey at Tri-Rivers in 2005 in the public safety services program, where she became a certified emergency medical technician, George said. At the same time, she was pursuing her studies to become a nurse. In 2006 she completed the practical nursing program and passed a practical nurse exam on her first attempt.

However, George said Rhoades had a desire to continue to advance in her field. In 2009, she earned her license as a registered nurse. Rhoades is now the director of the Orchard Park Facility in Bucyrus.

Tonya Boyd graduated from Tri-Rivers Career Center in 1993 in the accounting computer technology program.

“While a high school student, she was named the Outstanding Senior of the Year. She excelled in contests, was active in clubs and always brightened the hallways with her smile and energy,” said Larry Hickman, chief instructional officer for Tri-Rivers.

Boyd attributes her success to vocational education, or Career Tech as it is now called. “The Career Passport I earned at Tri-Rivers laid the foundation for my future,” she said.

Boyd continued her education at Marion Technical College, where she earned an associate of applied business degree. She then obtained her business management degree from the Mount Vernon Nazarene University and eventually her Ohio treasurer’s license.

She served as assistant treasurer for River Valley Local Schools and the Cardington Local School District. In July 2015, she accepted the position of treasurer for the Crestline Exempted Village School District.

Vince Reed is a 1987 graduate of the marketing program.

“Vince has excelled in his field by consistently being a confident presence in business settings,” Speelman said. “He has worked in customer messaging, sales leadership and market development.

Through the years, he has worked for companies such as Xerox, ACCO Brands Corp, Konica Minolta Business Solutions, Waste Management, Healthspot and currently he is living and working in Marion for HPM North America.”

Reed is a dynamic individual who earns lasting relationships based on mutual respect, Speelman said. “He utilizes those relationships to drive revenue through a multitude of sales channels,” he said. “He also gives back by working with youth at our Juvenile Detention Center and Rushmore Academy.

Engineering Technologies student at RAMTEC. Her goal is to work for Honda.

Tri-Rivers isn’t like a typical high school; that’s the best part about it. My program challenges me on a daily basis through various types of learning styles. I wake up every day excited to learn more about engineering and machining. I feel that it will help me in my future career. But I have to say my favorite part of Tri-Rivers is how passionate everyone is about their programs and future careers.
