Tri-Rivers/Lautenslager Distinguished Service recipients were honored at the 2017 Board Dinner, Wednesday, April 19 in the Multi-Purpose Room at the Career Center.

2017 Tri-Rivers/Lautenslager Distinguished Service Awards

The first Distinguished Service Award was presented in 1993 to Jack Lautenslager, who is oftentimes referred to as “Mr. Tri-Rivers.”  Lautenslager spearheaded the efforts to pass the original levy that provided the funds to build the Career Center that opened in 1976. He continued to share his expertise and talents with Tri-Rivers his entire life. Today the Distinguished Service Awards are presented in his memory to individuals or groups who donate their  time, resources and/or talents in order to make Tri-Rivers Career Center and Center For Adult Education successful.

Three groups/individuals received Distinguished Service Awards:

• Fairhaven Community

One the necessities for implementing a successful nursing program is to have an effective collaboration that expands traditional clinical education boundaries and leads to new opportunities for nursing education and practice, said Richard George, the Director of Adult Education. “For over 15 years, the Fairhaven Community Nursing Center has provided a great deal of support to the Tri-Rivers Center for Adult Education nursing programs. They have partnered with us by allowing our nursing students many opportunities for hands-on clinical training. The varying levels of patient care allow nursing students to refine skills learned in classroom and laboratory.”

Fairhaven’s commitment to our school and the community extends to providing student preceptorship opportunities.  Preceptorship is a practical clinical experience, in which, a practicing nurse volunteers to give personal instruction, training, and supervision to a nursing student.

We sincerely appreciate the support that Fairhaven provides to our students – friendly staff, amazing facilities, high tech environment, and a highly reliable and efficient communication system. The best part is that when you walk through the doors, it feels like home, said George.

Another necessity for implementing a successful nursing program is to have an effective program advisory committee, particularly for programs that serve to enhance the workforce, said George.

“The opportunity to obtain input, feedback, ideas, and different perspectives from individuals with a vested interest in the success of our programs and most importantly, our students, is paramount to the success, growth, and improvement of a career school, as well as the design, development, and improvement of the programs of study,” said George.

It was an honor for us to recognize Christy Biller, a Fairhaven employee who has been a member of our healthcare advisory board for over 10 years and in 2015 accepted the position to serve as the Chair of the Healthcare Program Advisory committee.

Christy has a great professional reputation and is associated with a very reputable employer; she has been the Staff Development Coordinator and Unit Coordinator for rehab at Fairhaven Community Nursing Center.

Christy’s commitment is evident as she consistently attends meetings, is prepared and provides a meaningful review of the Healthcare programs in key areas including equipment, facilities, program curriculum, and student outcomes. She has assisted in scheduling, arranging, and managing meetings.

Her participation in our Healthcare Program Advisory Committee helps ensure compliance with our accrediting and regulatory agencies. She understands the skills and knowledge required in the profession and can connect that with the health and nursing program of studies.

She has been a great advocate for the Career Center and its students and shows a vested interest in the success of our institution. She is always willing to help out and her service in providing advisement and support of our programs and students is very much appreciated. She is a very deserving of the honor of receiving a Tri-Rivers/Lautenslager Distinguished Service Award.

• Mark Robinson
“Mark Robinson has played an active role in providing technology training to area students. He has partnered with Tri-Rivers for years and has been a huge supporter of Tri-Rivers and RAMTEC,” said Chuck Speelman, TRCC Superintendent.

Mark has been teaching Industrial Technology at Harding High School since 2004. He has consistently worked at the National Robotics Challenge held at the Marion Veterans Coliseum and Fairgrounds.

He helped to host the original Vex Contest for Ohio at Harding in 2009. He has also helped to run every Vex Robotics camp since our first one in 2012. His support of RAMTEC includes being involved in RAMTECOhio Vex programming and being a teacher for Vex Robotics Train the Trainer.

His support of RAMTEC is one of the main reasons we had such a successful Level I Engineering Tech program this year. He sent us eight very well trained engineering students. He is part of the pipeline to fill the skills gap in Ohio.

Robinson truly was a very important piece on the creation of RAMTEC. He has helped us develop a great relationship with Harding High School. He is a tireless worker and has always been involved in all our contests, camps and events.

Mark was unable to attend the ceremony due to being at the World Vex Robotics contest in Louisville, Kentucky.

 

 

 

 

 

Tri-Rivers Nursing School Ranked #1 in Ohio

The Tri-Rivers School of Nursing was recently ranked number one in the State of Ohio by RegisteredNursing.org.  Eighty-four schools in Ohio were analyzed and 30 qualified to be ranked, said Dr. Emeline Kelly, Tri-Rivers Director of Health & Public Safety program. Dr. Kelly said RegisteredNursing.Org ranked nursing schools in Ohio by analyzing current and historical NCLEX-RN pass rates.

“They went back to the most recent years of data available up to five years, then averaged the schools’ pass rates, weighted the recency of the exam and considered the number of students taking the exam.”Dr. Kelly explained that the National Council Examination (NCLEX-RN) is the nationwide examination for licensing of nurses in the United State and Canada. Most recently the 2016 graduates of Tri-Rivers LPN to RN program achieved 100% passage of the NCLEX. In 2014 Tri-Rivers nursing program was the only RN program in Ohio with more than 10 graduates to achieve a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX-RN, in 2015 they achieved 95.6%.Dr. Kelly said the goal of the Tri-Rivers LPN to RN program at Tri-Rivers is two-fold. “First of all, we want our graduates to successfully obtain licensure as a Registered Nurse. Secondly, our students also receive education that focuses on the professional environment and current practice issues including evidenced-based practice and patient experience, in order to make them successful employees for today’s health care agencies.”

“We also place importance on continuing education by instructing our students that it is an expectation that they will obtain further education, minimally a baccalaureate degree,” said Dr. Kelly. “Additionally, we hold our faculty and staff to a high standard, relying on current practice and innovative educational strategies.”

Dr. Kelly attributes the high ranking from RegisteredNursing.Org and high pass rate of the NCLEX to her team who works one on one with students and “offers unparalleled support for students during their training.”

“We look at each individual student and work hard to support their goals of becoming a healthcare professional,” said Dr. Kelly.  Each student is different. We recognize those differences and provide the support that help them succeed.”

Katie Keller, a graduate of Tri-Rivers Patient Care Technician, LPN, and LPN to RN program, said, “I wanted to become a nurse because my grandfather was an ob-gyn in Marion, Ohio for many, many years.  He delivered thousands and thousands of babies. He had a great legacy of being a great doctor and I always wanted to follow in his footsteps. Tri-Rivers made that possible for me. I am now a Registered Nurse working at Marion General in their labor and delivery room, walking the hallways that he walked, working in the same delivery rooms and I couldn’t be happier.”

Keller said, “I’m proud of my hometown and our labor and delivery at Marion General  where I work. We have an awesome team. There are actually multiples of us who have graduated from Tri-Rivers.  “Tri-Rivers taught us teamwork.”

Dr. Kelly said at Tri-Rivers School of Nursing it is “all about relationships. We are partners with our students. Their success is our success.”

New Adult Welding Classes in Tri-Rivers RAMTEC

Welding is one of the few career choices that is in high demand at all times. To meet those demands Tri-Rivers Center for Adult Education is offering three part-time classes and one full-time class in their state of the art RAMTEC training center on the Tri-Rivers campus, 2222 Marion-Mt. Gilead Rd, Marion, Ohio. Students can enroll now for the 48-hour Basic Welding class that starts January 16, according to instructor Levi Retterer.

Part Time Welding Course Offerings

“Since welders are needed in almost every industry, it gives them the flexibility to switch industries without changing careers,” said Retterer. “Most career choices have ups and downs; whereas, welding has endless opportunities that keep fueling the demand for welders.”

The three part-time classes include:

• Introduction to Welding, which is designed to instruct students in welding safety and welding techniques. This 20-hour class is available Jan. 9-12 and April 17-20, 4-9pm, Monday through Thursday.

• Basic Welding  teaches students the basic knowledge of shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding and oxyacetylene cutting. This 48-hour program is available Jan.16-Feb. 2 and April 24-May 11, 4-8pm, Monday through Thursday.

• Advanced Welding is for the individual in the field of welding with experience in arc welding and/or has completed the Basic Welding program. This 48-hour program is available Feb. 6-23 and May 15-June 1, 4-8pm, Monday through Thursday.

The full-time 650-hour Tri-Rivers Adult Education Welding program in RAMTEC starts August of 2017 and runs through January of 2018, Monday through Friday, 8:30am-3:30pm, said Retterer. “This program covers the basics of Shielded Metal Arc Welding Flux Cored Arc Welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding with structural fabrication skills and hands-on practice and skill attainment lab sessions

The full-time welding program gives students the opportunity to earn industrial certifications, said Retterer.

RAMTEC instructor is a finalist for national award

mark-e_updated-webTri-Rivers RAMTEC Instructor Mark Edington, who was named Ohio’s Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE)  Postsecondary Teacher of the Year earlier this year, has been selected as the 2016 Region 1 Postsecondary Teacher of the Year. He will be one of five instructors nationwide vying for the 2017 National Award at the ACTE Excellence Awards  Nov. 30th in Las Vegas, according to Larry Hickman, Tri-Rivers Chief Instructional Officer.

“This is quite an honor—a well deserved honor—for Mark,” said Hickman. “We are lucky to have his talents, experience and expertise in our RAMTEC Center. This award recognizes career and technical teachers and teacher educators who have demonstrated excellence and best practices in career and technical education at the postsecondary level.”

“Mark Edington’s dedication to career-technical education shows through his passion to share his knowledge with students,” says Christine Gardner, Ohio ACTE Executive Director. “In 2013, Edington came out of retirement to teach the new Robotics and Advanced Manufacturing Training Program at Tri Rivers Career Center. As the only dual FANUC and Motoman-Yasakawa Certified Robotic Trainer in Ohio, he possesses unique skills that he has used to prepare his students for real-life situations.”

“Using a combination of theory and hands-on practice that he has learned throughout his career, Mr. Edington teaches students to react to real-world scenarios and cultivate problem-solving skills that will help them throughout their careers,” said Hickman.  “Mr. Edington was one of the hosts of Ohio ACTE’s summer conference professional development program in 2016 and continually shares his knowledge with colleagues for the benefit of all Career Tech students.

“Over the last three years in his education career, Edington has provided 245 students with thousands of hours of training. He has been instrumental in helping to fill the skilled-labor gap, not only in his community but throughout the state, as he has provided training to instructors that will be sharing this knowledge at eight regional robotics & advanced manufacturing technology education collaborative (RAMTEC) career centers,” said Gardner.  “His unique knowledge and willingness to come out of retirement to give his time to students shows his passion for career and technical education.”

The national postsecondary teacher of the year award, along with several other ACTE Excellence Awards will be announced at the ACTE Awards Banquet, a dinner and award presentation recognizing the best CTE educators in the country.

The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) is the nation’s largest not-for-profit association committed to the advancement of education that prepares youth and adults for successful careers.

LPN to RN grads achieve 100% passage of NCLEX

The goal of the Tri-Rivers LPN to RN program at Tri-Rivers Center for Adult Education is two-fold.
“First of all, we want our graduates to successfully obtain licensure as a Registered Nurse. 2016 Industrial Maintenance Graduation

The 2016 Industrial Maintenance Training Program recently held its graduation in the Giauque Auditorium on the Tri-Rivers Campus.  This program provides skills training necessary to perform industrial maintenance tasks in today’s manufacturing operations.  The graduates learned to design, build, test and troubleshoot.

They received hands-on training in Basic Welding, Advanced Welding, HVAC training, Basic Electricity and Electronics, Introduction to Computers and Hydraulics, Pneumatics, PLC’s, Machine Tools and more.

Outstanding Alumnus Carey Rhoades with Adult Director Richard George.

The 2016 Outstanding Alumnus Awards Evening held recently recognized “some amazing” individuals, according to Superintendent Chuck Speelman. “It is during this evening that our slogan of a school where you are allowed to, inspired to, and expected to be amazing, comes to life.”

“From an amazing dinner created and served by our Culinary Arts program, to thanking our Board members, to recognizing distinguished service and outstanding alumni, this night is important to us,” said Speelman.

Carey Rhoades Receives Adult Education Award
Carey Rhoades was the Adult Education’s outstanding alumnus. She was recognized for fulfilling Tri-Rivers mission of “being a responsible community member and embracing learning as a life-long process,” said Adult Director Richard George.

Rhoades began her journey at Tri-Rivers in 2005 in the Public Safety Services program where she became a certified Emergency Medical Technician, said George. At the same time, she was pursuing her studies to become a nurse. In 2006 she completed the Tri-Rivers Practical Nursing program and passed her NCLEX-PN on her first attempt.

However, George said Rhoades’ had a desire to continue to advance in her chosen field. “During this time, Emeline Kelly, our director of nursing and Public Safety Services, presented a proposal to the Ohio Board of Nursing that would allow Tri-Rivers to offer an LPN to RN Transitions program. It was approved and Rhoades was part of our inaugural LPN to RN class,” said George. In 2009 she earned her license as a Registered Nurse.

Rhoades has used her training, knowledge and skills that she learned at Tri-Rivers to excel in nursing. She is currently the Director of the Orchard Park Facility in Bucyrus. “She also gives back to Tri-Rivers by setting up clinical sites at her facility and serving as a preceptor for Tri-Rivers LPN to RN program.”

Tri-Rivers RAMTECOhio’s Mark Edington is Post-Secondary Teacher of the Year

Mark E 3 copyRAMTEC mark awardRAMTEC instructor Mark Edington has been named Post-secondary “Teacher of the Year” by the Ohio Association for Career and Technical Education (Ohio ACTE). Edington was selected out of numerous nominations from across the state of Ohio.

This award makes him eligible for the National Association for Career and Technical Education’s Region 1 Awards.

In 2013, Mark Edington came out of retirement in order to teach in the Robotics and Advanced Manufacturing program at Tri-Rivers Career Center. Mark, a FANUC Certified Robotic Trainer and Motoman-Yaskawa Robotic Instructor in Ohio, uses a hands-on approach to teach his students, utilizing real-world examples and his experience to give students a complete picture of the field. He has provided 245 students with thousands of hours of Robotic and Advanced Manufacturing training, and is instrumental in helping to close a skilled-labor gap across the state of Ohio.

Christine Gardner, executive director for Ohio ACTE, said, “Mark was one of the hosts of our Ohio ACTE Professional Development program and continually shares his knowledge with colleagues for the benefit of all career-tech students.”

Ohio ACTE is a statewide organization that advocates for career-technical education and offers educators the information, representation, and resources they need to provide outstanding educational opportunities for students of all ages and abilities. Each year, Ohio ACTE releases its Educator Awards, which are selected out of many nominations.

National ACTE awards will be announced in November, 2016.

RAMTEC Open House Tomorrow, Feb. 3

You can tour through the facility and check our high school and adult programs. High School students can also enroll during the evening into Engineering Technologies, Advanced Machining or Welding—all three programs offer bright futures and are needed to fill the skills gap in Ohio and the Nation.

There will be food throughout the event, as well as industry demonstrations.
