The Laws of Life essay contest was created by Sir John Templeton in 1987 to encourage young people to reflect and write about their “laws of life” or the core values and ideals by which they live their lives. The Templeton Foundation continues to encourage local schools and communities to sponsor contests. Ohio Partners in Education, a future workforce program of the Better Business Bureau’s Center for Character Ethics, has embraced this program as a key initiative in promoting positive character of Ohio youth.

Laws of Life is an excellent way to integrate character development into our writing curriculum, explained Wick. “It requires students to think and reflect on their own personal values, and provides them with a compelling occasion to write, edit, and revise—critical components of the writing process.
