Academic Award of Achievement Awards:  |
The award for the outstanding English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies Department’s student of the year is awarded to the student who has displayed a strong work ethic, perseverance, a positive attitude, and has shown a genuine interest in the subject area within the given department.

Alyssa Plybon, English
The English Department’s Outstanding Student of the Year recognition award is given to a student with high self-standards, a strong work ethic, a love of language arts, and impeccable academic integrity. This year’s recipient, Alyssa Plybon, certainly possesses all of these traits. From the first day of class to the last, she came in enthusiastic and ready to work. It didn’t matter what we were writing –  informational reports, persuasive pieces, or short stories – Alyssa had a stack of intricate, color-coded notes by the second day of any project. When I commented at times that she might be over-thinking things, she simply laughed. “This is how my brain works,” she would remind me. I can’t argue with that; the way her brain works produced many beautifully executed papers and projects, ones that I will save to show to my future students how it’s done. But Alyssa was more than a smart cookie, she was also a positive force in my classroom, always willing to share her insight or help others who struggled, even going so far as to create a template for a classmate who was struggling with the material. (I need a copy of that template, but the way.) She recently shared that teaching English was a future goal of hers. I hope she pursues it, because many young people will benefit from her energy and creativity. Congratulations, Alyssa!

Trista Funk, Math —Amy Hansen, instructor
Mathematics is not an easy subject for many students, but most jobs require some knowledge of mathematics.  The purpose of the mathematics classes at Tri-Rivers is to prepare students with the numeracy skills that they will need to be successful in their chosen career field and in life. The student who was chosen this year to receive the math student of the year award, is an individual that works hard to be successful in class and beyond.  This student may not be the strongest math student, but is someone who has shown tenacity and a strong work ethic.

Please join me in congratulating Trista Funk, IAM, for receiving this award for 2021.  She has worked extremely hard this year in class and at home, due to the hybrid schedules and quarantine.  She is always quiet and respectful in class, but is not afraid to ask questions when she has them.  That being said, she is also a student that I can count on to put forth effort to try to work things out on her own before asking for help.  Trista has the ability to be successful at anything that she attempts because she is not afraid to work hard for it and I have had the privilege of watching her come into her own throughout this school year.  Congratulations Trista Funk, 2021 Math Student of the Year.

Addilay Beeney, Science —John Seibel, instructor
The student who receives the science student of the year award, as selected by the science department, is an individual that goes above and beyond the science classes required of all students towards graduation. The student must show an extended interest in science and the role science plays in their career and daily life.

The student selected to receive this year’s award has always shown responsibility, reliability, and respect in the science courses while enrolled at Tri Rivers.  This student is conscientious about finding the right answers to any problem needing solved, and is diligent in completing her assignments in a timely manner.  This student has gone beyond the normal requirement of 3 credits of science and has accumulated an impressive 5 credits of science.

As my students know, I am a champion for women in STEM education. One of my goals throughout the past several years was to introduce my students to Innovators in Science and Math. My specific goal this year was to have all of the Innovators of the Weeks be women and/or persons of color because the students have learned their whole lives that for the most part science and math has been advanced by dead white guys. That is why I am so proud of this student and all that she does raise the bar for my class and the school. Please join me in congratulating Addilay Beeney of the Health Careers Academy program. Congratulations Addilay, for being honored as the 2021 Tri-Rivers Science Student of the Year.

Elizabeth Oney, Social Studies —Brett Gentkowski, instructor
This school year has been unprecedented. Even with all the challenges, they have faced, the senior class has continued to excel. This fact has made the decision very challenging to choose a person that I believe represents the values of a good student and a good citizen. All the students and staff would agree that I am the opposite of this student. I am loud and extroverted, and this student is quiet and reserved. To quote Stephen King, “Quiet people have the loudest minds.” She has an impressive intellect and the ability to ask questions and seek help when needed. Her lab instructor stated, “Even when she does not enjoy what she is working on or is struggling to grasp the skill or concept, she does not quit. She perseveres. She puts her maximum effort into every assignment, asks for extra help when needed, spends the time to study for tests, quizzes, and recognizes weakness, and looks for ways to improve.” She did everything to excel in class, and she will do everything to excel in the world. I am very proud to announce the 2020/2021 Outstanding Social Studies Student recipient, Elizabeth Oney.
